Status of Montellano

I have never heard anyone refer to Montellano as a barrio. I have lived in some areas where the locals often refer
to as a barrio such as las flores de cristo rey in santo domingo or the area I recently moved to here in Santiago. The
only Dominicans I have ever known to get offended by the use of this word (barrio) live in very wealthy areas and
consider themselves to be "high class" so the word barrio could never apply the area they reside because they believe
it is strictly for lower income neighborhoods.

I have never heard barrio used here unless it is in reference to a poor neighborhood.

Then San Pedro de Macoris is an exeption to this rule.

Al sectors are labeled by the ayuntamento with "Bario barioname" street signs.
Also the ones that are not exclusive to the poor.
