Who knows - But it was at 60 once, never understood why it backed off that.
I think inflation is a bigger threat than currency exchange to tourism and DR residents making ends meet

From this mornings NY Times.
One question came to mine was--Does the DR pay their debt in dollars or pesos?
This strength of the dollar could be a game changer for the DR...I think?
Both, but the majority of debt (external bonds) is in dollars.

The DR is in very good financial shape..........for the moment. The best financial shape in years.

International reserves are strong due to tourism, remittances, and exports. So strong that the government has been able to subsidize the cost of fuels for months now. Additionally, as was stated elsewhere, the Central Bank had the foresight to see interest rate hikes coming in the US...........and so raised their interest rates multiple times to front run or buffer the peso. It has worked............so far.

The problem with raising rates, if not done carefully, is that it eventually chokes off demand...............leading to a slowing of the economy..................stunting overall growth and increasing unemployment. And with that, should any one of the current three stools of the economy falter...............the economy, and more so the peso, will start to revert back to its trend of 3-4% yearly devaluation. Those are the keys to watch closely.

And like clockwork, as the economy starts to falter, the government will look for more ways to raise revenues to meet its debt obligations............in the form of new borrowings which could lead to a weaker peso...................which leads to the need for newer sources of revenue..............which leads to new/higher taxes.............which then leads to......................

Correct me if I am wrong: I have a college tuition to pay starting in Aug. The school accepts just about anything including Amex. I pay my amex bill from a US held dollar account. I have a dollar and peso account in the DR. It seems to me the best alternative would be to pay with the Amex card. Since the school doesn't charge an extra fee I have a sound record of the transaction and I gain a few reward points at the same time. Right?

Reward Points are a big plus.... and the no extra charge from the school really helps

My Chase card allows me a 'time payment' plan at 1-2% over a few months .

My first option would be to just pay in pesos.........if you have them.

Second option would be as you stated, pay in dollars and collect the reward points.

The worst option would likely be to use the AMEX card, pay in pesos with it, and then wait to see the conversion rate (usually not the best.)

Good luck.

Worth less than two cents. I guess you hopping on inflation to boost the value of that advise. Correct?

I use my visa card to pay for everything in pesos here in the 🇩🇴
I consistently get a better rate than I would converting USD into DOP using cash here in the 🇩🇴 (.3 to .5)
Unless I am converting more that 5000 USD into DOP I get a better rate pulling DOP out of the ATM using my Schwab account.

Now, that is when I am not doing my laundry of course. 🤑
But what do I know about 💵❓
I don't have Big 💰like sum o y'all up in here🤪

But I do miss the 1 USD to 58 DOP days

I do the exact same thing. Everything I pay in cash is from my Fidelity account. Restaurant, Altice, and grocery stores are mastercard where I can.

This is exactly how I paid my niece and nephew tuition except with my Visa. Never had an issue and the points really added up.

I pay everything in pesos. On rare occasion I pay with my Chase visa debit. The exchange rate isn't great and I get charged a 3% foreign exchange fee. Last month I used it on a RD$5,049.27 restaurant bill, I got charged US$92.57 plus US$2.78 foreign exchange fee. That gives me and effective exchange rate of 52.96 to 1. NOT GOOD. I haven't used any of my credit cards in a long while here in DR. But I'll use my Chase Freedom visa next time I'm out to compare it to my Chase debit.

I use a credit card that does not have any foreign exchange fees.
And my bank serves a clientele that they know often spend a lot of time overseas.
So, the card works out quite well for me.
As does my ATM card.

@NotLurking what is the best way have found to exchange USD for DOP?
