A supermarket, or a colmado?

A supermarket if it fits the definition. It is small but different enough to a colmado. It is registered so we can buy directly from suppliers / manufacturers. Those will not sell directly to the public without that registration. Customers can shop themselves, so no ‘over the counter’ selling.
We do not have a music system so we wouldn’t qualify as a colmado lol.

About the big supermarket chains I guess as what happens with many big companies that at the top they don’t know or care what happens at the bottom. Or they are focused on the products which make the biggest profit. If there was a shortage on products I would think the big ones would buy it all, leaving nothing for the smaller businesses. But that is not the case seeing that the smaller supermarkets in this thread are better stocked.

Super Pola in Sosua is not closing......it is expanding.....getting bigger......the work is being done right now.

People are very conscious about prices, if you are able to sit a fraction below Bravo or Sirena prices they will come. Around here people also had to take the trip down to San Cristobal and now they have another option.

"Infrastructure is not causing Playero any problems with replenishment that I can see. And their inventory selection is vastly greater and superior than Pola's, And I might even suggest Sirena Puerto Plata's. When we go to PP we go to Jumbo and rarely Sirena." One reason Playero is so well stocked is there new warehouse/almacén up the side road alongside the old police station. The new warehouse looks to be as big or bigger than the supermarket.

I was hoping it was to the west of SC, too far for us. We have a large colmado, an pollero, and a small supermarket in Palenque to the west, but for most things we have to go to SC or SD.

Have you ever visited Supermercado Saomy? I haven't but that's where my neighbor goes.

Sirena is crazy these days unless you go at 7ish in the morning or evening.

Many businesses in Sosua are closed.

I've ben there four times recently Dec and Jan.
Everything used to be open packed with people even Dec 24th and Jan 1st..... years ago.
Now may businesses are permanently closed, on Sunday there were very few people on the streets during the afternoon.

Playero still is doing good business with good product selection, specialty items which Jumbo does not have.
Few good restaurants remain.
Dolci y Sapori with Claudio and his wife have consistent quality and good service.

Haven't been to S. Pola.
The reality is profit margins need to be made by a big store.
With declining residents and visitors in Sosua it is hard for businesses to generate sufficient margins to be profitable and carry operating costs.
Hopefully S. Pola will remain.
Good management would keep customers informed, we are expanding for your convenience .....to keep them coming.
If closing maybe not.
It's the DR and Sosua, one must make allowances.

Funny that this is mentioned I was not impressed with the selection or lack there of,,playjero a lot better

Very close to the center of town. If you google it you'll get a good idea of how to get there. It's almost a straight-in shot when you come from your home.
BTW, if you google them, you can see quite a few pictures of it's layout.

Playero is locally owned and run in a very hands on manner. I often see the owner inside scrutinizing the shelves.
As an example, the cashiers in Playero are much better then in Super Pola where they are sitting in ridiculous chairs and are undisciplined.

Playero had to up their act after getting competition.
I used to hate going into Playero, but it has improved over time and yes it has a few things nobody else does.

Competition is good.

They are moving away from that, hence changing the name of the Super Pola to Sirena Market. The owner that made La Sirena (now Sirena) a household name in the DR (it was founded by another Spaniard in Spain and then moved to the DR and put the same name to his new store; many years later during the civil war sold it to Mr Ramos, one of his employees, and moved back to Spain mostly because his kids got used to life there and didn't want to live again in the DR), he was born to a family of merchants since generations in a Spanish town called Pola in the north of Spain. That's where the name Super Pola comes from. Its the name of his birth and grow up town. He "retired" from the business a few years ago and left it on the hands of his children, but you will still see him in several Sirena stores in SD. He still does that, picks a random Sirena store to spend a few hours visiting and basically bossing everyone around as he is still the owner, can't break an old habit (that you missed a spot cleaning here, why this shelf doesn't look perfect, this light bulb has been burnt wince this morning and no one changes it, etc.) Sometimes he would even go to stores outside SD, just appear there eith no previous heads up. Of course, if you don't know who he is, he can walk right by you and to you is just one more random person in the store.
