Hi all,
We have an apartment in Sosua and are looking to buy a standard TV (about 15" to 18") and a safety deposit box of the type you find in hotels etc with an electronic combination keypad and backup/overide key. Can anyone suggest the best shop(s) to get these from close to Sosua/Pto. Plata as we will be over in a couple of weeks and would like to get these sorted out then.
Thanks in anticipation.

Tropical Regards

TVs and Safety boxes

You will find both at PriceSmart in Santiago, best place to by. Sorry I do not know the name of the street, but as you drive into Santiago the best way for you not to get lost, stop by a motoconcho driver and ask him to show you the way, follow him in your car and pay him after you get there. That is the best way to get around until you get familiar with the city. You will need to purchase a membership card at PriceSmart but it is worth it ($900rd)

As an alternative to the in home safety box, you might also want to consider BankerTrust vault behind Banco Santa Cruz on Sosua's Pedro Clisante street.

Hotel style safety boxes can be jimmied in less than 30 seconds (see youtube). "People" may see it and think you keep valuables, which can attract some "interest" (you do not want to wake up with a machete on your neck). In some cases, thieves have found it less complicated to just remove the whole safe or safety box.

Hmmmm....

I hadn't though of it from that angle. All we want it for is for somewhere to store the passports etc whilst we are there.

Many thanks for the advise from all of you.

The price of safe deposit boxes in PriceSmart is pretty high (mostly because they only carry brand name and large sizes). You can find good boxes and much cheaper at Ferreteria Linares (in Cabarete) or Ferreteria Bellon in Santiago. I'm not certain that 8A carries them (at least they didn't have any a year ago when we were shopping for one).
