I am going to santo domingo for two weeks in august and was thinking I might take my 8yr old german shepherd with me...is it a lot of work or would I be better having someone look after him in new York...any thoughts from someone who has taken their dog with them before

You will have trouble booking a dog that time of year... big hassle... airlines have heat embargos.
Skip it for two weeks, IMO..... vets both ends, crate, drop off & pick up..
Big deal......... dog may not appreciate the fuss.

Get a pet sitter (or family/friend) to either stay with your dog at your house or I am sure there are pet sitters who take the dog to their house.
thanks for the info...I normally have my tenant downstairs look after the dog for me ...he gets to stay in his own house and the tenant walks him and feeds him and brings him down to his apartment ....so he will not be travelling to santo domingo ...if he complains ...ill blame harleysrock

We are kinda spoiled here on the NC where we can bring our dogs practically anywhere, whenever i bring them to Santiago or SD I have to do a lot of hiding them. Hard to hide a German Shepard probably
It would be very difficult to bring your German Shepard with you. Some airlines have restrictions on when pets can fly due to weather conditions and also some airlines do not allow certain breeds to fly. German Shepards may be one of these. You would need to purchase a large cage and get travel papers for your dog. Don't put your pet through this. Leave him home. You will have a better time and the dog will be much happier in NY.
Maybe someone here has a Shepherd you can borrow to spoil for a few weeks. Worlds greatest natural guard dog and smart. We are house sitting some Canadian guys G.S. Beautiful dog but untrained and wilful. Came home last nite and she had tipped over our 55 gallon plastic garbage drum and scattered the contents all over the lawn. Sadly she is not staying long enough for me to give her some basic obedience. Bro in law took the dog in to be helpful.

all you have to do when you arrive is walk around find a dog off the street of your liking and that would be your two weeks there
