For a few calls to check in, go to a local Codotel place and use their phones. I called NYC for about 6-8 cents per minute. I know some people buy calling cards but I don't know what the per minute cost is for those. Don't expect to use a 1-800 calling card from outside the DR.
Codetel and Tricom calling cards are available at many hotel gift shops and shops all around the country. Codetel and Tricom are telecommunications companies.
What ever you do, do NOT use your personal calling card unless you want your next bill to be about $1,000. It seens that they copy and sell your card number. At least seven to eight years ago this was happening frequently.
