Just got back from 2 weeks at"Butlins"in the Caribe. it says its 4 star, i would suggest 2plus nearer the mark, most others i spoke there said the same. 90% of guests are Puerto Rican, very few brits...which is ok. Food good, only in the special resturants you get serverd the same food as the buffet, but by a friendly waiter.Booking resturant tables you have to start queing at 06.30am to book you table, not worth the effort for the Mexican one. Only one aircon bar which doesn't allow families. Thomson excursions are a real "rip-off" approx ?65 ea for lorry safari of some of the countries rubbish tips, fishing trips ?60ea in a boat which has many engine problems and breaks down 30 miles out.I spoke to others about other thompson excursions all said what a rip-off. In fact I'm sorry to tell you I couldn't find one person from uk or usa who thought this place was 4 star , or who would come back here again. We got moved from our original room as it just wasn't up to what we thought even a 3 star should be, my kids could decorate better!
Scuba at ?25 ea is good.Do not buy from the beach or shops near the hotel as they must think we're all millionaires or something.
In general the whole of the South which is all we saw is like a giant rubbish tip, not the locals fault as there is no national refuse collection, but as a developing country who needs tourism the locals should not charge london prices and beyond if they want people to continue going there.
As you have gathered, I though the DR was not up to much, Thomson rep..very good but excursions NOT,
Hotel.....Sorry, 2 star +, my advice, change it if you can to Punta Cana area where at least you may find things outside the hotel too. Sorry!!

If you're smart enough, you don't need a rep to tell you what there is to visit. I suggest to anyone visiting a new country to look on internet to find out what there is to do in that country. That's what I did and have been going every 4 months since 1999 and won't stop going. Next time, I suggest you book a little condo or villa near the beach and "live" the Dominican life. You'll enjoy it more.

Hi'
I quite agree with you, I've done similar to your suggestion across Africa and the Far East, i've also done hotels there too and they are far superior to the Costa Caribe. However, this time we wanted more activities to suit two typical teenagers. Across Africa and Far East even in Squatter townships etc you don't get rubbish everywhere like I saw in the South of DR. I'm sure you are right that DR is a great place, but can they please clean it up a bit and stop trying to rip off tourists. You are also quite correct about using the internet, I've done that on the aformentioned trips and it ain't that difficult either.
