If you don't stand up for your rights, ideas or principles, who will ???
Nobody here. We are the road team in the DR and the refs are always side with the home squad. Even if you win some small battles, you are setting yourself up to lose the war.

These type of people find conflict at the deli counter and department stores. They are always asking to speak to the manager. A miserable existence can be found anywhere in the world.
I always wait for the moment when the employee says "I AM the manager"! With all the anger that they have they usually don't have a response, lol. No follow up punch.

Yes!! I can identify these very losers from across the room. They are giving the waiter a hard time more often than not, complaining about the language barrier and of course threatening litigation to whoever they think they can intimidate. I could go on about the traits of these species. I steer clear.

When all the players in court were laughing at the same time, maybe she was threatening to post her displeasure on Facebook.

My theory is the thing that will get you in the most trouble here is standing up for your principles. Don't waste your time.
I hate say it but 90 % have no standards or Princples

Litigation. I like that, I'd like to use that word more often. Who's suing a waiter?

Try not to deal with Dominicans on any business transaction that takes more than the same day.
There are enough foreign mechanics, landlords, electricians and maybe even plumbers that you should be able to avoid them.
Cheating the gringo is a national pastime
As I stated many time the key is low key living not flaunting what you have.trust me you can live very well here but be low-key about it don't put it on Facebook don't put it on Instagram don't put it on your status on WhatsApp never tell people when you travel or where you go because I hate to say a lot of folks are envious and jealous here.

I plan to live here for another 10 years God willing then I'm going to need to be around better Medical Care. when I leave I will cherish the times I've had on this island because I have had some amazing times and I've lived very well

If she said Google translate wasn't of much help, not only did she not know what they were saying, but very likely that neither did them understand her. Sometimes a person trying to say something in a language they don't dominate can sound funny, especially if it sounds like gibberish. That is simply the way it is.

I do not know who these complainers are, but I would like to share with them and you MY afternoon.

I taught 5 year olds all morning. I have them excited about Christmas, and today, we even received a phone call from Santa! They are being extra good so they are not on the naughty list. Late morning it began to rain. No outdoor play. Darn. They needed to move. But after watching Frosty the Snowman all was well again and they went home.

Arrived home and finally, my Starlink was connected as it should be. It began raining. Hard. And the house was cold. I closed the doors, turned on the oven, put on Christmas music, listened to the rains on the roof, and whooped up a double batch of Christmas cookies. (Enough to pass on to 20 Dominicans who do not know the joy of Christmas cookies.)

While the house began to smell like heaven I thought about how fortunate I am to be living here in the mountains, to work for those less fortunate, and to share my expertise, my energy (all of what is left at 69) with children and be able to give small tokens of my appreciation.

Life simply does not get any better than this. I did not need to go to the mall. I did not need to max out any credit card. I do not need to have a gift list for children and friends who actually need nothing.

And this is only the beginning. I have my calendar booked with special events in several poor mountain communities where we can share these simple joys of the season. (Thanks to the generous support from several members of this message board.)

This is the rich life here in the DR. Living, loving, sharing with others. Being able to trust others because I know how to read a dicey Dominican and/or situations- just as I would in my country- but on the whole having established my integrity, my respect for this country and my particular communities, and having shared my time and love in a non-material way, life simply cannot be any better.

And I bet there are members of dr1 who agree.

It isn't for everyone, this is one of the hardest countries to be part of - although perhaps with the happiest and most approachable populace known to humankind, still; too many variables to get anyone frustrated.

Thank you Lindsay for a very nice story. Life is what you make of it. I hope your health stays good and you get as many years as you are happy with out of this place.
The world would be a much nicer and better place if more people took your attitude.
Thanks again.

No, The DR is not for everyone, I don't think any country is. But personally I would not want to be anywhere else. On the plus side I can do pretty much whatever I please. The down side is everyone else can too. It is not anarchy but it is far more libertarian than most people realize.
