I'm still trying to figure out how like a General on their salary can afford prime prime beach front property, which they never hardly used, with a shack built on it, with armed guards .. and then sold later to developers at a handsome profit ..
it is fascinating how things work in the DR.

it was common practice for presidents to give parcels of land to loyal military members in the past. I have quite a few military friends who own 5-6 apartments that were given to them by Balaguer.

One of them was part of Balaguer's escorts for many years and he has done very well selling off a ton of prime land in different areas.

I know of one retired military who has his house full of artwork from the national gallery. he just bought a new Lexus SUV that cost more than the house he owns.

The number of people in this country who have 24/7 military assigned to them as guard and drivers would astonish anyone.

it is still common to see folks in supermarkets and malls accompanied by uniformed officers

They are folks who aren't always rich financially but live life like royalty. Many of them end up with politicians jeepetas when the politician moves on to their next new vehicle.

What was the issue there? Not enough money to do the project?

I heard from someone working on the project that they wanted to import better quality fixtures and other items not available in the DR to do the refurbishment. Customs told them the price for importation of the items and they decided not to continue with the job. Now the place will likely remain idle and crumble into the ground.

Once again you prove that you’ve not only lived here for many decades, but that you totally understand life here. Bravo JD.

Mr AE’s cousin was an Air Force General (now retired) and Balaguer’s pilot, and piloted for Dominicana back in the day. Somehow, through him, my suegra, his aunt, ended up with a personal driver and guard. Seeing an armed military man in her house daily confused me for a long time, made no sense to me. I learned over the decades.......

Hispaniola Beach Condos used to be Playa Imbert or General Beach. General Imbert was given that beachfront parcel supposedly as a gratitude for his part in the Trujillo assassination.

From 1992-1994 I lived in an apartment on top of Cruz Brea, ex general under Balaguer. He had a guardia 24/7. My brother in law, spaniard, manager of a large hotel chain had a military in uniform as a driver and BG. In fact anybody with enough money can have uniformed personal ...just know the way..

True, but I’m not talking about personally paid personnel.

Stay on topic people.
