I have a question---Why would in Spanish speaking countries would they call the letters

B ---larga
v--- corta

If they didn't make the same sound there would be no need to differentiate--
You would just call it by it's name. But if they makes the same sound you can't because they make the same sound--no?

That's not their alphabet name.--correct??

No. Its name is uve or v.

To distinguish one from the other: B (b labial) because the lips (labios) touch or almost touch each others. V (v labiodental) because the lower lip and upper teeth are involved (in the original prounciation of that phoneme and in other languages). Some people call them: B de burro y V de vaca.

This is what I call having fun.

b larga is b because it's written taller
v corta is v because it's written shorter
that's the long and short of it.

v corta is also known as v chiquita
b larga is also know as b grande
it has to do with the old lined penmanship papers where you have a dotted line in the middle... if you go above the dotted line, as in writing the letter b, it is longer or bigger than the letter written up to the line as in the letter v.

It is a spelling tool.

Norma Rosa, thanks for the treat of reminding me of b de burro and v de vaca.
