DRPAWA - if India is not a good vocalist, who is?!! She is one of the very few that CAN sing! Who are you comparing her to when you say this?

But it strikes me that this movie was always going to be about Lopez first and Hector Lavoe second. Lopez had no business being a part of this movie and she ruined it.

I read the reviews when it came out and decided that it was not for me. But J-Lo was one of the producers in the movie so I guess she would disagree with your "had no business being a part of this movie" statement.

But I do hope that the new Lavoe movie due out in February is at least watchable.

Also, Marc and India come from the old free style days, so they have been singing for a long time.

JLo is a marketing genious. IMO she cannot sing or act. The girl can dance she is very pretty and has the body I strive for everytime I'm on the treadmill. Meanwhile - she is all over the place winning awards and raking in the dough from album sales. If thats not magic, I dont know what is!

I have every SINGLE cd these two have made. I even have India's freestyle days (along with Brenda K Starr - BTW, I LOVE Freestyle!). Eddie Palmieri knew what he was doing when he pulled her from that dying scene tho. Rumba!!

I would say she's an okay vocalist but certainly not good - she tends to scream rather than carry a tune to it's end. Top notch singer to compare anyone to: Mariah!

Do remember the first free style song?

I will give time to guess.

Talldrink is correct on this one, India has one of the most strongest voices out there period. She can hold a note with the best of them, go back and listen to "La Gran Tirana" or "Ensename A Olvidar".

And "Mi Primera Rhumba" which I think was her first crossover salsa hit.

That's not magic, thats' just marketing hype by a bunch of cynical Madison Avenue suits who saw the void Selena left in the latino community and decided to fill it will a pasty cream filling instead of someone with real talent.

You wanna know what magic really is? Going into J&R music world the other day, I asked a clerk what was playing in the latin section. The guy told me it was Ray Barreto but I knew it wasn't. Those guys are infamous for not having a clue about what they sell, but I digress.

I noticed an older gentleman looking through the latin section so I figured I'd ask him. He tells me' "I should know this music better than most-let me help you out."

It turns out the gentleman is a childhood friend of Willie Colon, who then called him on the phone right there and then.

I knew it was him because I asked him a very personal question and he knew the answer. My best friends' aunt went out with Hector Lavoe and her and Puchie used to go at it all the time and he remembered her name.

Speaking to a true musical genius and a man who is so involved in the community as Willie Colon is was a tremendous thrill. Now THAT is magic.

Juxtapose that with the feeling I got when I finished watching "El Cantante".

One made me feel really proud about the achievements of my people, and the other made me feel ashamed.

I could not have said it better. I just hope Salsa makes a speedy recovery.

I think Marc Anthony was perfect for the role of Hector Lavoe, he even has his hump :ermm:
