Exactly. And also take an interest in them, pay them on time, give them chance to learn new skills, respect them, value their opinion, make them feel part of the team. All of that stuff is very very important.
This is such excellent advice and business MO. It's not woke (which I despise), it's just common sense.

Poppy Cock! This thread is about "tipping". Clouding it with feel good terms and pretending that it is good for workers is bogus. Skilled labor is one thing. Service workers want and work for tips. Denying them that and attempting to balance one's personal and business budget on the backs of service workers that are on their feet an entire shift is wrong and sends a negative message to say the least. The best service workers work where they can earn the most money, not where they get the most slaps on the back.

In a few words I think what Maria is trying to explain. Instead of you paying your maid let's say 5000 pesos per month to do her job, and then give her 15000 pesos in tip for her good job, why not just pay here 20k per month right away and always expect an excelente work, every time?
That's how it works with every other job.
If your a good officer worker you get a higher monthly salary, better benefits etc, not just a one time bonus once in a while. If you're not doing what is expected of you, then eventually you get fired.
bogus !! we are not talking about electrical engineers or business accountants, we are talking about service workers. You know, the people that wait on you at restaurants, clean your bathroom, take your heavy suitcases to your room, bring you a cocktail and similar.

Clearly there is some confusion about the "meaning" of this thread. Tipping service workers as Big posted is what was being asked. And yes, everyone has made their opinion known. This is not about treating your employees well versus tipping. Many have posted in other threads that they "tip" their Uber driver, taxi, etc...so isn't tipping the waiter/waitress, bell boy, etc... the same thing.

Money talks, simple as that…. Words of praise, Google reviews, pats on the back do not pay the worker’s bills. Giving someone a tip in the DR is the best way of showing your appreciation for services provided. I really cannot believe this thread has had 166 posts about tipping etiquette as anyone who has spent more than a week in the DR let alone live here should realize that the workforce is run on tips. I think I will ask my garbage truck man if he wants his 300 peso tip or a pat on the back along with a Google review. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

An article from a UK paper today
================================================

(Deleted by moderator, not DR related)
There was so much discussion about the DR and the UK tipping habits that I thought it was germane to the topic...... You do not, it seems
Have you you deleted all the UK chatter too in the other threads ?

Very difficult to draw comparisons or cite alternatives when you cannot post them.

Oh well
The DR in general seems to be very ‘inward looking’

Navel studiers hence some of their problems
Same for DR1 I guess

Remember when Robert deleted all of Cdn Gringos posts about his search for a place to live??
UPROAR!!

He apologized and tried to repost it but it was a permanent delete
I think La Profs son restored it

A PR disaster for him

Speaking of tipping, remember the application of the 10% tip on your take out/drive thru/delivery of food is illegal. If that is charged on your receipt, contact Pro Consumidor at the number below.

You should print this or carry a copy in your smartphone to use to contest a businesses charging the extra 10%.

I've literally never seen not a single "grocery bag girl" in my years here. Not one. Not in El Nacional ni Jumbo ni el Bravo. Let's not diminish the respect given to those who do the job by giving credit where it isn't due. Let's instead applaud those young guys who work in the stores bagging groceries and delivering them on motores.

Honestly the transportation in this country is incredibly affordable and I am really grateful to the guys who make that possible. And make no mistake about it they are, 1000:1 males to females.

I was just some days in Miami flying up from the DR. I can definitely see where the tipping culture comes from. You are encouraged to tip everywhere. Took a free hotel shuttle to airport and travelers were tipping the driver. I think in the DR the strong American influence does that Dominicans who can do tip.

Sirena in San Cristobal frequently has 2 or 3 women bagging groceries.

I do not understand the logic of this. It should be all or nothing.

If the 10% tip is split amongst the whole staff, then why would eliminating one part of a dining experience (the server who doesn't even receive the full tip) eliminate that?

If I go to Wendy's and dine in, the 10% is charged, but if I go through the drve-thru, it is not. What is the difference in service between the two to charge a tip or not?

Not like this matters anyways because the fast food places have a different base prices for dine in and to go so that at the end of the day you are paying the same price either way.

I included grocery bag girls solely to appease the "woke" lurkers that may be circling. :)
I have never seen one either...in the Dominican Republic.
