I get the idea that I should tip even in an AI resort. Can anyone give me the denominations of the DR currency and what is the approximate equilivant of one US dollar? I want to tip properly and would probably leave one coin and not know if I were insulting someone or over tipping. Thanks for the help. We will be leaving Tuesday morning.

Right now, the largest "Coin" is 5 Pesos which = USD 15 cents!
IMHO don't tip under RD20 Pesos!
If you like a particular bartender or waiter feel free to tip RD100 Pesos every few days, you will get VIP treatment.
I always bring a bunch of USD singles just in case.

Boatman,
The DR has the following coins;

1 peso
5 pesos

They are coming out with a 20 peso and 25 peso coin but it hasn't hit the streets yet.

Paper Bills;

10 pesos
20 pesos
50 pesos
100 pesos
500 pesos
1000 pesos
2000 pesos

Tipping has been discussed on this board a number of times which you can find by using the search tool. Let me add, as has been discussed before, that Dominican restaurants add a tip to their bill so additional tipping is up to you. It seems to be the general rule that if you tip you will get better service but this isn't always the case. Remember that this is a poor country and the employees don't make a lot of money so any help you give helps them. At the same time don't go overboard and tip a weeks wages to them for a service they are required to provide. Use your head and welcome to the DR.

I forgot to mention and you asked the exchange rate. Presently the rate is about 34 pesos to the American dollar and this amount fluctuates daily but you can use 32 to 1 as a rule of thumb. That being said then a bill of lets say 950 pesos in a restaurant should be with the governments 16% and the tip of 10% added in which would be 677 pesos for the food, 205.30 pesos to the government and 67.70 pesos to be divided up and given to the waiters and cooks. For the waiter or waitress to realize a benefit for his or her service to you and they provided good or excellent service then you should hand a tip directly to them and hopefully out of sight of the owner or other staff. Hope this helps.

They make peanuts

Just exchange money into pesos and depending on your service... TIP accordingly.I myself.. out will Tip 30% over and above the bill to the server and then if at the bar before he also gets 30%. Don't get me wrong service has to be above PAR. If the food is not up to your expectations.... that is not their fault, and should not reflect their tip. You simply do not go back again, but it's not the server's fault about the quality of the meal.

Tip the maid RD$50 to $100 a day, which is $1.50 to three bucks. Give it to the maid in person.

Restaurants figure out the meals value and pay 10-15% of that. For a decent sit down meal not less than RD$100. Give it to the waiter.

Bartenders you'd give the change or a buck a drink to in the US, give them RD$30 a round.

Remember in your AI you are not eating and drinking "for free" , you paid in advance.
