I am a 30 year old man who will be in the dominican for 10 days. I will be traveling between santo domingo and santiago and would like to visit some of the towns along the way. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Directly off the main highway are Villa Altagracia, Bonao and La Vega. If you want to travel a bit further off the main highway, the towns that jalencastro mentioned, plus Jarabacoa are also options.

In most towns/cities in the country, other than SD, nightlife is non-existent from Monday through Wednesday. The action picks up a bit on Thursdays, but doesn't go into full swing until Friday. Of the places mentioned, Bonao, San Francisco de Macoris and La Vega will offer the most variety.

On most days, you will find the largest selection of women in La Vega, if you know where to look. ;)

On the way from SD. / santiago, you'll see a lot of truckstops " paradas " .
My tips for Dominican food are:
1- < Tipico Bonao >, ( half way ) where you can enjoy the Dominican " Sancocho ".
2- < Chivo picante > ( across the new toll ) my favotite plate is Chivo picante con moro de guandules.

Which Dominican will you be in?? Does he or she know that you will be in them for 10 days?? Wouldn't tthat get a little uncomfortable after that much time??

My friend, it is The Dominican Republic, DR, The DR, or La Republica. Not the Dominican.

Now back to the topic on hand.

Thanks for the info and sorry about my ignorance of the vernacular. I will be in santo domingo for the weekend and will head north on monday. I will probably spend a day in bonao and possibly spend the night in la vega. After a day or two in la vega I think I will spend the rest of my time in santiago. Anything to do in la vega on a monday or tuesday night.

Anything to do in la vega on a monday or tuesday night.

It's pretty much dead! :(

Go to Jarabacoa during the day and enjoy a splash in one of the many swimming holes. On the way up, stop at a place called "D'Jesus" on the left side of the road for some really good Dominican food at a great price. Have some of the bbq ribs with your rice, beans, salad and fried platanos. You won't be sorry! ;)

At night, the only action that you might find on a Monday or Tuesday will be some beer in the park with the college girls. Just ask someone to point you to Okie Dokie. (pronounced uh-kee duh-kee by the locals)

How far is Jarabacoa from La vega and what is the best way to get there? Should I try to hire a guide and what would the cost be? Thanks.

famug, i take it you are not familiar with driving around DR? you arent renting a car are you? i am very adventurous and drive everywhere. i have 2 or 3 detailed maps of the countryside and usually roam around solo, but it helps to have a guide if you dont know the language! i agree with the other posts here, go to Jarabacoa and swim, then chill at the park with the college girls and relax, you'll be ok!

How much would a taxi or guide cost from la vega to jarabocoa? Also, is it worth spending more than a day or two in la vega before traveling to santiago?

I don't know about the cost of a taxi or guide, but there are "guaguas" (small buses) that travel back and forth between La Vega and Jarabacoa, which would be safe and a lot cheaper.

A day or two in La Vega before heading to Santiago can be fun, and you should find plenty of things to keep you busy.

If you are interested in moutains the other option is a trip up to Constanza (2000m up in the mountains) - the junction is just after Bonao heading towards Santiago. The views up there are spectacular - get a moto concho to take you to La Siberia. Couple of decent cafes and hotels in town.
