Why don't you pay for her social security which includes health insurance and pension? Isn't that mandatory, like for all other type of workers? I think we pay about 1,500 pesos per month per employee.

i did start a private bank account for my last worker... paid 8000 pesos a month for two days work and then put 1000 in her account... in the end, i was paying too much and not gettting the place clean enough... so i have a new worker and am paying less

i do not think that household workers or part time workers are covered by the social security laws.. correct me if i am wrong

shalena, i presume you will have a dominican health insurance for the whole family. i think you HAVE to get it. humano and universal are the best, i think. when you have a family plan you will not pay much for an additional person, about 1000 pesos per month? i am sure she will appreciate having a good insurance.
give her a double pay for xmas and if she has kids another double pay in july so she can get school supplies.

i do not like the idea of paying workers more than dominicans do just because you have money. it's stupid. i do not pay double for a quick coffee from the street vendor and i do not pay double for a ride in a guagua. and i will not pay double to my maid.

Yes, I will be getting her Health insurance and social security, 2 weeks vacation (she's actually getting 2 months vacation with pay cuz we will be in the states during the summer and she will continue to be paid), and extra month at Christmas (not counting all the goodies I bring her from NYC! :)
Juts wanted to make sure I was paying her fairly for the responsibility she has, without severely overpaying, you know?
Trabajadoras Domesticas are worth alot more to single moms than to 2 parent families...

Am I correct to understand that your housekeeper will take care of your children while you go back to the US for 6 days a month? Are you comfortable with that? Reason being my sister in-law needs to travel for a few days and I will be out of the country. We have a trusted housekeeper that has volunteered to watch the children but my sister in-law refuses to leave her children with anyone other than family. I am just trying to get some opinions on this.

Ummm, so....if I was not comfortable with it, I wouldn't do it. Number one, I judge people by their character, not by their title of family or not. I have some family I would not dare leave my children with, and friends that I would (and have).
My housekeeper/nanny had proven herself time and time again. She has had this arrangement with me before and she did an excellent job for 14 months. At the tone my children were 15, 10, and 6 and they will tell it ALL (which is why we fired 3 ladies before her), I have no doubts about her. BTW, my son's Dominican aunt came from the campo and watched them for me about 3 times and it was a disaster (oh, she's FAMILY)
If today I had to go somewhere for an extended period of time and had a choice of leaving my kids with my mother or with Betania (Nanny), I would fly them to DR. Punto, without hesitation.
It's thoughts like your sister-in-law's why so many children are molested or physically abused because instead of choosing a caretaker by their character, they choose family who could probably care less about their kids but they keep sending them there because they're "family". How many stories of Hispanic children who are left behind by their parent(s) who have to go to the states illegally to make money and are left with family members who abuse them or treat them less than their own kids...Family.
In the almost 4 years that I have known Betania and with the 14 months that she worked for me, she has been nothing but honest, honorable, and hard working. Treating my kids as if they were her own and I can't ask for better than that.
Your comfort level and your family's comfort level is just that, yours. Everyone is different.
So now that I have explained, if you need further information on my comfort level, lifestyle, or anything else NOT pertaining to the WAGES of Trabajadoras Domesticas please feel free to PM me or start your own thread.
Thanks :)

I have decided to stick with the 10,000rd, along with Social Security, Medical insurance of our same quality, 1 month extra pay in December, 1 month off paid in the summer, holidays off or (if I am in NYC) time and a half pay and I have decided to gift her a resort weekend for her Birthdays.

I thank you guys for all of your advice and input on this matter. I feel confident with this arrangement!
