As of December 31, 2005...everyone travelling from/to the US needs a passport...no more getting by with just a birth certificate or photo I.D.

MQ I believe that has been extended to the end of this year but always a good idea to have a passport anyway. ;)

To the OP
what country are you coming from? We are good guessers but not that good ;)

You're right AnnaC...This is what I got from the US Dept. of State website:

IMPORTANT TRAVEL
NOTICE
Change in International Travel
Requirements:
All travelers, including U.S. citizens, to
and from the Americas, the Caribbean,
and Bermuda will soon be required to
have a passport or other accepted
document that establishes the bearer’s
identity and nationality to enter or
re-enter the United States.
WESTERN HEMISPHERE TRAVEL INITIATIVE
U.S. DEPARTMENT
OF STATE
DEPARTMENT OF
HOMELAND SECURITY
CHANGE FROM PRIOR TRAVEL
REQUIREMENTS
All travelers, including U.S. citizens, to and from the
Americas, the Caribbean and Bermuda will soon be
required to have a passport or other accepted document
that establishes the bearer’s identity and nationality
to enter or re-enter the United States.
The initiative will be implemented in phases. The
proposed timeline is as follows:
December 31, 2006: Requirement applied to all air
and sea travel to or from Canada, Mexico, Central
and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.
December 31, 2007: Requirement extended to all
land border crossings as well as air and sea travel.
For more information on the initiative and how it
may affect you, please visit the State Department’s consular
website travel.state.gov or the U.S. Department
of Homeland Security’s website www.dhs.gov.
For more information about applying for a
passport, U.S. citizens may visit travel.state.gov or
call the National Passport Information Center toll free
at 1-877-4USA-PPT or TDD/TYY: 1-888-874-7793.
Foreign nationals should contact their respective
governments to obtain passports.

I had no idea it had been extended...but I stand corrected...anyway, it's always a good idea as you said to have a valid passport...
