Your tour operator or hotel should give you a complete list of available tours with prices... it is usually less than 100USD per person...It depends on some factors which will be explained to you be those offering the tour. You may perhaps save a little money by buying from outsiders, but the difference may not be significant and in the end you do run the risk of falling prey to some scam...Unless you are SURE you know what you are doing, buy from your tour operator or hotel.

We are backpacking and take only 3 days at the start and 3 at the end of the trip. I think about Saona but many people told me that I can find the same beaches near hotels

Of course you don't need to go to the SI for great beaches...the Punta Cana area has some of the finest...Try to get to the ORIGINAL bavaro beach, which is the one by the huge Barcelo complex (the beach itself is open to everyone, during the day).

People go to Saona for the overall experience...first getting to Bayahibe, then the sea journey both ways, the island itself is nice of course and does have great beaches, there is a so-called natural swimming pool in the middle of the sea, etc. It's a whole package, and highly recommended. If you can get to Bayahive (near Romana) and take the tour from there, you'd probably pay under US$50/person, but I doubt you'd save any significant money over buying the tour that picks you up and bring you back to your hotel.

we paid 50 usd to saona from boca chica. its a really fun day trip. Very touristy....but fun. Just get a good nights rest the night before....the bus ride starts early....and runs about 2 hours...the catamaran ride is about 1.5 hours (lotsa fun tho). But by the time we go there we only had 3 or 3.5 hrs and i slept for most of that time. The food they served was just so-so. My friends where happy with it tho. Very bland...and not really dominican. BUt it was ok. Oh...and there is no real snorkeling to do. Isla Catalina is supposed to be better for that.
