Lately, Trump has been touching the right buttons.

He was quoted saying “Dominicans are great.” https://listindiario.com/la-republica/20241215/donald-trump-dominicanos-son-grandiosos_837886.html

Then, he is not even president yet and already assigned an ambassador to the DR, one of the first 3 Latin American countries that already have a US ambassador for his term. With Biden the DR remained without an ambassador almost to the end of his presidency. https://listindiario.com/la-republi...s-campos-nueva-embajadora-eeuu-rd_838058.html

What else is the DR in store for during his presidency?

Love him or hate him he can at least complete a sentence and speak without a teleprompter - so right off the bat he's a improvement.
But my guess he'll be too busy to spend any time thinking about the DR.
At least the US will have an attractive woman (Campos) as ambassador. Former CIA - not sure if that's a plus or negative.

Trump’s focus is illegals migrants and drugs entering the US. illegal drug smuggling through the DR to the US could be a sore point between Luis and Trump. Very little has been done by the DR to reduce the trafficking and what is being done is due to pressure from the USDEA. Trump is taking a tough stand with Mexico and Canada on illegal drug trafficking and I expect him to do the same with the DR. The DR was low on Trump’s radar in his previous presidency. I dont expect that to change.

There is little the US can do regarding the failed drug war. Well, except for build more jails and waste more mony on it.

They can continue to talk a good story, but production and usage just continue to go up.

True that illegals are a focus and rightly so. Could see a few more illegal Dominicans deported back to the DR than in the past.

I'm a Big Trump Fan but he will deport a looot of illegal scumbags and we will get a fare share of them here in the DR. And believe me that these are not the ones that steal handbags from lady's leaving the ATM.

The kudos the DEA director just relayed to the DR drug enforcement staff are window dressing and a morale booster. Small victories will continue to happen but the war is lost as long as the US appetite for illegal drugs remains at its current levels. If the DEA slap on the DR back catches Trump’s attention, he may look favourably on the DR for a short time. Other than that, Trump’s interest in DR affairs would only increase if he was able to develop some DR business interests, golf courses, resorts, hotels, etc. if I recall correctly, he had some business interests in the DR during his last presidency but they failed to materialize. As far as I know, Trump has no personal or political vendettas against anybody or anything in the DR. That’s probably a good thing.

The elephant in the DR room is how Trump approaches the Haitian problem. He hasn’t said so but I expect him to cut US funding shortly after he is sworn in. Watched a BBC segment last night. A reporter went on patrol inside an armoured vehicle with Kenyan troops. If anything, it makes the viewer realize the futility of the intervention. Even the Kenyans are calling for the UN to step in with larger a peace keeping force. If large numbers of Haitian refugees start heading towards the US border as the intervention spirals downward, Trump will expect some help from the DR to control the exodus. I expect Trump to be a friend and foe to Luis, but Luis has enough political acumen to placate Trump when necessary. This is Trump’s last kick at the presidency can. He admitted he will be too old to run again. Luis has the strong political mandate needed to weather any Trump political storms for the next three years.

Yes about time someone puts the pressure on the countries that the drugs are coming from.

They already are and not just returning Dominicans. The DR has been a haven for all sorts of lowlifes. The underlying concern here is, if the illegal importation of Chinese chemicals needed to manufacture fentanyl is choked at the Canada-US and US-Mexico borders, the DR could easily become a default illegal importation site. The DR imports a lot from China and the illegal pathways to get the chemicals from the DR to the US already exist.

They've already got something like 25K Haitians ready to deport after the 20th.

So a whole lot of deportations will be forthcoming to both the DR and Haiti.

I do hope the DR is ready. As for Haiti, I am not sure how that will work, given the ongoing strife in the country. But one thing is perfectly clear, there will be no more lip service as to removing many of the illegals.

Trump’s border czar is already working on the matter….well before Trump even takes office.

Trump’s border czar is talking about rounding up as many as 15 million illegal aliens. I don’t know what percentage of those are Dominicans but the logistics to round up, temporarily incarcerate, and then ship those numbers out of the country is mind boggling. That’s like rounding up almost half of Canada! I suspect they will pick away at it slowly which may give the DR a better opportunity to deal with a large number of returning Dominicans. Hopefully, out of this Herculean US effort may come a better system of border control. One can only hope. US border security has been a political football kicked around during elections by both party‘s for far too long.

From what I've head and read, if the illlegal aliens have kept their nose clean, they don't have anything to worry about. It's the criminal illlegal aliens of all nationalities that need to be in fear.

I can see military planes flying into Haiti, deplane them, and take off again.

That would reduce the number of deportees significantly but not the overall crime rate. The majority of crimes committed in the US are commited by US citizens not illegal aliens. A fact verified by US crime demographics.
