THANK YOU-THANK YOU. I really appreciate the honest answers I have received. Love this site. There should be more web sites like this for people to learn and vent. Thank you all again. It appears that the Juan Dolio area is the best for part time people. I am essentially looking for a view and warm weather to sit out on a balcony to sip wine. Since I love showers, I have to have dependable water and electricity. Any more of you want to put in their 2 cents worth, I would still appreciate it. THANK YOU ALL AGAIN.....

Nothing beat Casa De Campo Hight security, full-time electricity, five minutes to La Romana airport, ten to twenty minutes to beautiful beaches, Plenty of restaurants and culture every where. Lots of interesting people in the area. The ring that rule all. Casa De campo is the place to be if you can afford it.

I have to agree entirely with HB..........

.......our business touches ALL of the DR - there is no place we "aren't" on a regular basis....and I say, theres no place like Santiago! I fly in and out of the DR on a regular basis and Santiago just feels like home (likely because I am not a "big town" (NY) kind of guy. Santiago is a FANTASTIC base of operations for us.

Suerte! Dave

P.S. Oh...and another big attraction to Santiago is that the world famous AZB lives there....

I would also have to agree with the Casa de Campo answer ....

...if you are looking to buy into a "community" with absolutely 1st class accomodations. As a community, Casa de Campo looks up to no one in the DR (and about anywhere else in the Carib for that matter).

Suerte!

to each their own

Everyone here on dr1 has different opinions as to where to live. My advice to you is to look, look some more, and then look again. Choose what FEELS right for you. Once you have found that spot, then you can look forward to finding out how nice this country is. Meeting people, discovering new areas, finding your favorite beach, etc.

I live in Puerto rico so i will tell you Puerto rico because is an american territory in Latin American with the best infrastructure in Latin American!!!!

Now if we are talking about the best place in the D.R i think it will probably be Casa de Campo it is the Most exclusive the Electrical infraestructure has endure many years uninterrupted, there water and sewer are the best. Private police is the best as well as private fire and Rescue and soon as in the next 6 months a Private state of the art american standard hospital!!!! Punta cana is still very new even thou the electrical company is private and many comunities enjoy great security and so on it is developing. Casa de Campo has been aroun 30 years and it has proven to be the Jetset of the caribbean. The realstate market value in Casa de Campo is the highest in the D.R and one of the Hisghest in Latin America!!!!! Now it is very expensive if you try to buy on budget there are not any property in casa de Campo for less than 400,000 thousand Dollars!!!!!!!! and that is the true. Also is that the autopista reaches up to la romana so that means in an hour and 15 minutes or less you are in the capital as well that in la romana you have a great Jumbo Hypermercado as well as a Nacional supermarket in la Marina inside the resort. In Punta Cana you have very limited small supermarkets and for most mayor purhases you must travel to la Romana or even la capital. Also Casa de Campo airport has conections to all U.S ariports as well as 3 daily flights to san Juan which is the American Airlines hub!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My vote is la Romana is has been proven!!!!!

Santo domingo north

U must live here full time like lambada said. Thats basicaly anywhere in the country accept of course gated communities and hey even then. If u have adopted Dominican family through marriage it helps. Santo domingo north very nice upcoming area. not far from the new airport Isabella, 1/2 hr from Las Americas and Boca Chica 45min to Juan Dolio. The Zoo the Jardens Botanical is close very Beautiful. New Metro to Capital 2 min away big stores Doctors vets and hardware and building materials tiles cememto etc. very close. the area is very quiet and I beleive someday soon will be the new Arryo Hondo or Los Rios which is not far either. There r even farm stands all around where u can get fresh goods. The town of Villa Milla which is poor but not has bad as its reputation is also close. The so called Model City is nearby. The north park is close. U can build a nice house in this area, but I must warn u that the prices for land etc has rocketed up since I started and finished my casa 2001 to 2003. The streets need better work but the greatest thing for me is I live with Dominicans not tourist or forigners and the view is beautiful. Also I'm on a hill no floods no damage from storms House is 3 levels all concrete including roof wall around.. I hope this helps. I get excited just talking about this place , so I will end this now Good luck .Former New Yorker Italian tranplant...P.S forgive my spelling lol

My choices for part-timers like myself:
-Palma Real in Punta Cana (was a little too expensive for me and not enough easily accessible beaches)
-Perla Marina for beach closeness (where I own a few villas)
-Cabarete beach condos like: Nanny Estates, The Victorian, Cabarete East.

Except for Palma Real, the rest are all on the North Coast but closer to Cabarete (sports beach) rather than Sosua (big belly beach).

Pls to go to the hot spots like: North Coast, La Romana, Punta Cana and check real estate. It depends on what you like and your budget.

Cofresi gets my vote. It is a bit pricey but it is safe and fun. Ocean World and the new Casino have added a lot but the best part is that those who live there are nice and friendly.

The OP might want to check out Cofresi and Costambar just west of Puerto Plata. While overall they are not very 'secure,' there are pockets and individual condo projects that are very secure with their own electricity systems and/or back up systems. You are only 4 miles from Puerto Plata and 1/2 hr from the airport. Only 1hr from Santiago. Lots of locals and foreigners to mix with.

Cofresi Gal

Cofresi gets my vote. Nice developements are happening. On my last visit I did not have to use my flashlight once becuase of a power outage! What a change from a few years ago when there could be hours or days without power.

Are you referring to the Victorian Condos that are being built by Perdomo in East Cabarete? If so, how are those looking and what are they seeling for on the front row? Is the East side any less safe than the West side.
Thanks
