Winde give it up - he just likes to argue to hear himself
You can say that again.
Renewal location of the passbook is not related to denial of SSA benefits.

Renewal is forwarded to the U.S. by courier and returned to Embassy of request, then forwarded to you.
I tend to agree.
Form: SSA-7162 / SSA-7161

All people receiving Social Security benefits with foreign addresses registered with the SSA. It does not matter if your check is deposited in the USA or to a foreign bank account because it’s all about your mailing address on file with the SSA.
And/Or if SS payments are direct deposited to a DR bank, which SKY assumed I had done and never did. And SKY also assumed I don't have a US mailing address. Next SKY will be telling me how they will cancel my Medicare Advantage plan....

So, please follow the directions in post 1 if you need to renew your passport and safe travels.

I have used the embassy office in POP on other occasions. When I needed my passport renewed they told me to go to Domex. I was lucky as Domex has recently opened an office in Sosua. At the back of the area next to Banco Santo Cruz. They helped in all ways possible. Thankfully I didn't need to go to POP with the bridge/detour issues.

The bridge/detour is really no big deal at this time. I have done it many times.

But yes, the only way now is using Domex to and from the US Embassy to renew a US passport in the DR.

The only way to renew your US passport now is through Domex. I renewed mine in July and am still receiving my SSA payments into my US bank account. Just because you renew your passport here doesn't mean you're living here. As long as SSA has a US mailing address, you're fine. Good to know there's now an office in Sosua.

This is the one way you can get your US Passport renewed in the DR if it is not an emergency.
Do everything at this link plus one more thing below:

I used the DOMEX office in Sosua. One thing not mentioned to be needed is a copy of your current passport photo page. That is required by DOMEX, so add that to the list or Domex won't send it.

I sent my passport for renewal on February 28 at Domex in Sosua and got it back today, It had shown up at Domex on April 10.
Great info, thanks! Did you send a copy of your entire passport along with the other documents, or just a copy of the photo page? And, did you receive your old passport as well as the new one? Again, thanks!

Just follow the instructions on the web site. So simple. Copy of front page. They return the old passport with a hole punched in it. I did it with my almost 3 year expired passport and it worked just fine. Have passport in my custody and still getting my SS deposited in USA account and never had a new form to submit. My old passport only had 1 trip stamp. Once to USA and back to DR. New passport probably won't have any stamps.

I had to include the old passport and they returned it along with the new passport.

And to be clear regarding others posting about how they did it before, the only way you can renew now unless it is an emergency is to use DOMEX to send and receive the passport, no matter how many times it may have been done in a different manner previously.

Domex made sure I had everything needed including 2 photos (as stated in the list of requirements).

  • Your most recent U.S. passport and a copy (This is the copy I missed by my mistake and had to get of the photo page before DOMEX would send it)·
  • Two (2) new 2×2 inches passport photographs that meet standard requirements
  • A completed, legible and signed, and dated Form DS-82.
  • $130.00 non-refundable application fee (See payment instructions below)
  • If applicable: Evidence of Change of Name – e.g. Marriage Certificate, Statutory Declaration, or Court Order (name change must have taken place after your passport was issued)

It was only $110 certified check when I did my last renewal in 2021.

And the form only requested one new color photo.

So when the Puerto Plata consulate was announced it was said that would be a location that handled passport renewals.
Did they change that now to be they won't?

And if they can not do that what do they do ? because they aren't involved in VISAs

The only way to renew a US passport in the DR that is not an emergency is to use DOMEX. The ONLY WAY.

So no, you cannot go to Puerto Plata for this. They can answer your questions about how to renew a passport using DOMEX.

I have used the embassy for other things. When I sent them a message to set up an appointment about renewing my passport. They told me to use Domex. Domex sent me the list above, and fortunately for me the office in Sosua had just opened.

Has anyone paid their US passport renewal online? If so, was it simple or do you have any tips?

I paid mine online and I messed it up somehow. I was looking at the USA format, and it is/was a little different than the USA embassy in SD. Domex straightened me out and I redid it correctly. If I remember correctly--I printed out a form and filled it out using a black pen as the form required. What I should have done (from the other site) was fill it out online. I think I am remembering it correctly.
