I am not very good with the search button here. The most recent information I see is from 2023. So please, either give me the correct thread with a recent answer or some advice, here.

In October 2025, I am traveling to the US for a month. My passport expires the beginning of March. Since - as far as I know- passports cannot expire within 6 months of travel to the DR, I am cutting it very close.

In the past, I renewed in Puerto Plata at the consulate there. Do they still do this service? If not, does the consulate in SD do it? I am hoping not to make this too complicated.

Thanks for any help you can give.

I renewed mine there as well back in 2014. The Puerto Plata Consulate Office (which I heard is closed now) no longer offers this service.

You will have to make an appointment with the embassy online in Santo Domingo. I was able to apply/ recieve my current passport from an office in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL last year when visiting family.

Good luck.

Speaking of renewing a US Passport you can renew any time. Even years before it expires if it is convenient..........

Has to be done via DOMEX not by going to the US embassy. Only DOMEX. Very efficient and NO trip to Santo Domingo needed, thank the gods.

Just be aware that renewing in the DR might and I do say might flag you for living here. That would trigger an automatic yearly or semi-yearly form to fill out and mail to the US. If these forms are not received your SS and Medicare is suspended. I am not saying it will happen, but there are people on this forum that are flagged. I don't know of anyone renewing a passport, but it certainly is a possibility..................

The form does ask for mailing address, so if renewed here in the DR, your mailing address will be here. You will need your postal code, which you can find at this website https://inposdom.gob.do/codigo-postal/?provincia=puertoplata I saved the link as such because I live in POP, the province/city can be changed to whatever is needed, I doubt the postal code really needs to be accurate, since Domex sends/receives the paperwork. Sky's warning is a good reminder for those who might be concerned about that...it wasn't a concern for me when renewing a couple years ago.

To sum things up: You can renew via Domex, without having to show up at the embassy, if you: 1)have a 10 year passport, 2) Your passport is in your possesiona and is in good condition, 3) You haven´t gone through a name change, 4)You were 16 or over when you got your previous passport. If that applies to you, you fill out your application, pay the passport fee online, and bring all your docs with a copy of your passport to Domex. Youll also need a Domex account.
Right now the process is fast. It takes about 2-3 weeks to get your new passport.

Otherwise, you´ll need to get an appointment at the US embassy, complete the application, etc. The Domex page has a lot of info about it. PM If you have any questions.

I renewed in SD a couple of years ago. In a day. Went there (this particular time) without an appointment. That's a no.no. Went to head of outside line and spoke to security(?) and told them my pp was full and no room for stamps. Told them I had trip in 10 days.
Could not have been nicer and directed me for " emergency"passport. After a couple of hours went to lunch and came back at three to pick up my passport.
Hint: Be nice. Talk about your problem. They will help you.

BTW I have since learned full unexpired passports are not a problem. SDQ will overstamp and JFK doesn't stamp.

She cannot renew a passport at the US Embassy the same day or anytime close to it. All US passports are printed in the US at two locations. Johne needed room for stamps on his, not a new one.......................
