Using Dominican Passport to Enter DR

I used my Dominican passport to enter and leave the DR this past week. In each case, there was no issue at the airline check-in counter, but the Dominican passport control agents politely asked if I also have a different passport, and they wanted to see it. I wasn't in the mood to argue or have a discussion about it so I complied. They then stamped my Dominican passport, which is what I wanted.

I'm wondering what the issue is here. Do they suspect my passport could be fake or something because I don't look Dominican? I also showed them my Dominican cédula and driver's license but they still wanted to see my US passport.

I was travelling with my family and none of them have Dominican passports. Not sure that matters.

Any insight and advice here would be great, thanks!

There is really no reason on entering the DR, only leaving to another Country..........

I don’t know why do you even go through a in person Migración agent if you have a Dominican passport.

Register for Autogate (you can do it at the airport, just ask to register and they will direct you where to go and registration is easy and straight foward) and you’ll be able to use the machines which never have lines for them since few people know of this free service. You just put the passport page with the photo facing down on the machine so it can scan it, look at the camera so it will take a photo, and put your finger in the indicated part of the machine to take a digital version of your fingerprint. The little door opens and you’re free to go. The whole thing doesn’t even takes 3 minutes. While everyone is in the long line at immigration, you zip right through as if your a celebrity with VIP treatment. You simply have your Dominican passport registered for Autogate and registration is done once and last for as long the passport is valid. Your Dominican passport will never get stamped again everytime you enter the DR, but there will be a digital recordof every entry which comes up on the screen whenever your passport is scanned.

Now, this only works with Dominican passports at Las Américas and Santiago.

As for why you were asked, whether you have a Dominican passport or not, the place of birth part will be the same in all the passports you get in your lifetime. If you were not born in the DR, it will be clear by looking at that part. This is regardless if you got Dominican citizenship practically at birth while born abroad or naturalized in later years.

It's because the other people in my family do not have Dominican passports. I assumed it would probably be based on the same logic as the system at US airports, where US citizens travelling with foreign-citizen family members are required to use the passport control line for foreigners.

Well unless your Dominican passport has an American Visa glued to it, you need to have your American, or other countries passport to actually get on the aircraft flying to the states. Customs told both my wife and I that have both Dominican passports and Canadian ones to use the Canadian ones coming and going if travelling to the US or Canada and we could use the Dominican passport travelling to Colombia.

They asked you because they already saw in the system that you have dual citizenship. I have a friend that he use both, coming to DR he always use his Dominican passport and its registered with auto gate,

Their main concern seems to be that whatever passport you use, use the same one coming and going, otherwise the date stamps don't line up.

It would seem to me as Bob said if your Dominican passport did not have a visa in it for the country you visited (if required), it would make sense they would ask if you had another passport.

That’s correct, dual citizenship.
They asked me if my other passport when I came back because I also left with my Dominican one, but that’s only where I can not use autogate.

Arriving in SDQ with carry on only took me last time 6 minutes from plane to exit door, just love it.

I think that is not very important, I was traveling with my friend to South America and he was going to use his USA passport and they sent him to unlocked it because last time he used to come here overpass the 30 days and he didnt want to to go to anotehr queue he used his Dominican passport and no problem.

My husband let his Dominican passport expire about 20 years ago, so he always uses his USA passport, and he has to have it unlocked every time we go (we always stay over 30 days)

As I recall my wife ---- who also let her Dominican passport expire about 20 years ago ---- doesn't need her Swiss passport unlocked.
However on arrival and departure she has to show her Dominican cedula as well as her passport.
