Validity of cedulas

As I wrote before, I just got my permanent residency card renewed for 4 years to the date of the renewal. I also found out on that day that (unfortunately) my cedula had not yet expired and doesn't expire until my birthday later this year. I was hoping to get the residency permit and cedula both renewed on the same day like I did last time (2 years ago). It will be quite inconvenient to have to come all the way back just for the cedula renewal, but I guess that just comes with the territory. :ermm:

Anyhow, I'm wondering when my next cedula will expire. Will it be on my birthday in 4 years?

new cedulas have an expiry date printed on them and they expire exactly 4 years after being issued, whatever date that may be.

Don't believe what it says on the card when you got it two years ago - mine said my birthday as previously but on checking it ran out in April, not December. The date it actually expires can be looked up on their website Consultar C?dulas Extranjeros and that is the correct date you need to go by.

As dv8 says, the new cards actually show the correct expiry date.

If you have six (6) months or more in arrears will pay RD$3,000.00 pesos. If you have five (5) months or less in arrears will pay at the rate of RD$500.00 per month. Here is the schedule of payment when your cedula expires , from the govt site above . If you are tardy by six months you pay double for renovation . Or less than six months 500 pesos a month

ha ha, true enough :) when you enter cedula number the site will throw in a quote with the exact fee. the first month after expiry of cedula is free of charge, that's when you are supposed to do the deed.

I just renewed my cedula...which had expired back in 2009...so it was pretty pricey. However, I learned while I was there that it was a very good thing my residencia was in effect. Had my residencia also been expired I apparently would have been placed in the WayBack Machine to start the entire process of obtaining a cedula and residencia all over again! Yikes!

With this information, I went back again to renew my cedula and it worked! This thread has just saved me a whole lot of time, money, and hassle. Thanks!

I'd also like to clarify a frequent point of contention. There have been a few discussions here in the past about changes in marital status with regard to cedula renewal. Some have claimed that it is necessary to present an original marriage certificate with apostille (or legalized) and translated into Spanish. That is false. All they asked me to present was a copy of the marriage certificate (which is in English) and two minutes later I'm casado.

when i went there they asked me for a copy of the certificate of marriage, not specifying details (as in legalized or not). since i cannot be bothered with all this crap i am staying as single in all my documents.

good to know for others that it does not have to be legalized then.

Excellent news - after almost 38 years of marriage, Mr. AE's cedula still says he's single. If that's all we need to do, it will be done next trip. We're reaching the ages where we need to think about what I'd do about our properties there if something [God forbid!] happened to him. Our land in Ocoa is in both names, but the house and land at Playa Najayo are only in his, I don't want to think about the hoops I'd have to jump through if government considers him 'soltero'.
