i went to villa mella on my recent trip to SD. you could not pay me enough to go and live there. it's not even about the safety but the dirt and the noise in unbelievable...

I'm going to go with dv8 on this one.
It has been a long time but I don't recall a lot of green, as in plants, flowers or trees.....You know, as in "ease the savage beast" and all that.

I call Villa Mella an Ultra-Barrio. In January 2005 my friend’s girlfriend apartment was burglarized while he was visiting from the US. She lived in Villa Mella. They stole his US passport, sneakers, laptop computer, electronics and gifts he purchased for her from the States. There were no pry marks on the lock or the door’s entrance. Up to this day, I think his girlfriend set up the burglary while they were out of the apartment. I remember we went to the police station in Villa Mella and there were people hanging in the police station and in a park near by and they all looked dirty, hungry and desperate. The funny thing was there were always a lot of people outside just hanging around in Villa Mella.

Gazcue obviously doesn't compare to Villa Mella but I wouldn't call it a neighborhood for wealthy people. I would never live in Villa Mella but neither in Gazcue.

Gazcue is not populated with wealthy people or a lot of foreigners.. We do get tourists.. But it is a middle class. working class.. even.. place.. compared with Naco or Piantini. There are lots of furnished places for rent to foreigners. It is considered sorta Swamp Bohemian by the altos in who live in the really uptown places.

Gazcue was one of the first "rich" areas of SDQ many years ago and still has some large "mansions". It would be upper middle class, which means to 80% of dominicans you are rich if you live there. Naco and Piantini are more upper class and feel less "dominican".

I lived in Gazcue for years and it is still one of my fave areas. Two doors down from my old place was a "compound" that took up half the city block. Last name Brugal.

Comparing Gazcue to Piantini and Villa Mella, it is much closer to Piantini than it is to Villa Mella.

Villa Mella covers the entire spectrum of the broad brush term shythole.

It has all the problems of any barrio caliente. There are also some extremely wealthy people who are armed to the teeth who wouldn't hesitate to kill any tiguere who is stupid enough to mess with them.

Homes get "burglarized" ALL over the Dominican Republic not just Villa Mella.

To the OP the upside moving to Villa Mella opposed to Gazcue is the rent in Villa Mella is much cheaper. You have been in DR for a while now ,so you should know how to handle yourself in barrios like Villa Mella.

Don't talk too much, mind your own business, keep your doors locked, and hope for the best.

On the flip side Gazcue is very very nice it is one of the few places where you can walk everywhere and the abundance amount of trees allows for some nice shade as you walk up and down the streets.

BTW Like someone already mention you can't really compare the two neighborhoods.

If the OP was so experienced in DR, he would not ask about differences between Gazcue and Villa Mella.

Correct comparing the two is kind of like comparing horse apples to red delicious apples
