Visiting Haiti to renew tourist visa

That's correct. Based on the title of this thread, I thought the OP's friend might be Haitian.

Yes the title and also some comments makes it a bit confusing as Tourist Visa is NOT the same as Tourist Card. Tourist Visa is required for those who are nationals from certain countries and requieres you to apply for it outside DR, whilst a Tourist Card is "given" (not physically anymore) to anyone coming from a country that doesn't requiere a visa and entitles you to stay for max 30 days.
So two different things.

The visa would have to be issued by the Dominican consulate in Haiti.

Why on earth would anyone who is vaguely sane be willing to risk their lives setting foot in gang-controlled Haiti just to avoid paying an exit fee? If anything goes wrong, there is zero consulate assistance there, you'd be completely and utterly donald-ducked. I was having a chat with one of the French embassy staff who was previously stationed in Haiti a couple of weeks ago and he was saying it's seriously terrible, seriously dangerous, just a complete mess.

Pop over to Miami and do a little shopping, check out anywhere that's cheap on Arajet and go there and back on the same flight even. Or, even dare I say, think about applying for residency. But please please don't think about Haiti.

My friend wants to do a quick visit across the border to renew his visa so that he can open a bank account. I thought I might go with him just to say I've been there. Has anyone any experience of this? Can you just cross the border at Dajabon, have a very quick look around (maybe half an hour) and come back, getting a new stamp?

Before anyone says it, yes, my friend could apply for Residency but he chooses not to for his own reasons and it's none of my business.

Where is your friend from? And are we talking a visa or tourist card renewal? I may have mistakenly replied with an assumption it was about a tourist card which others have stated does not renew by going to Haiti.

If it is an actual visa, forgetabboutit as well in such a dysfunctional and dangerous failed nation.

Too much bad info on this thread. As a gringo, I went over twice in 2019 and the clock was reset upon reentering the DR from Haiti after a week visit.

Secondly, northern Haiti is not the same as Port au Prince. It is relatively safe there. In fact, I would choose N. Haiti over the bowels of any big US city.

There was no intent to stay a week. indicated in the OP. That is very different than hopping back and forth in the same day.

My friend is from the UK. He has an expired tourist visa and wants to get a new tourist entry stamp and in his passport. So far nobody seems to know for certain if by leaving the DR and re-entering an hours or so later you can do this, but thanks for trying! If any now info comes up, please let me know as we would like to go next week.

I learned something new today. I didn't think it was possible for a person from a tourist card country to get a tourist visa to the DR.

How did that happen and how long is it good for? Multiple re-entries , hence the original question?

Just curious, but how do you know the clock was reset?

People with a UK passport do not need a tourist visa for Dominican Republic in the first place and so it seems that he has overstayed his 30 days and has not applied for an extension . It would be interesting to know if he will have to pay a penalty for overstay if he crosses the border into Haiti. When he returns to the DR he will return with the right to stay another 30 days and the right to apply for an extension .

If your friend is from the UK, why did he need a tourist visa to come here?

I remember when I was going to Costa Rica often that expats living there would go to Panama or Nicaragua to reset their tourist card. CR required that you had to be out of the country for a minimum of three days to do that. Not sure if the DR has any such requirement(?).

I'm sorry - I seem to have confused some people by my use of the word "visa". He has a regular 30 day tourist entry stamp on his passport which he has overstayed. He just wants to leave the DR and return to get a new stamp.

Yes some were confused about which type" of visa. Now that it's a "30 day visa" that brings us back to square one. WHY? Extend or pay overstay( fees or fines, whatever , pls don't start THAT subject up again). Why go to Haiti and re-set the date?? Not very cost effective is it?

Because both times the passport was stamped and when I left the next time the fine (or lack thereof) was calc'd from the reenter from Haiti date.

I know that's supposedly the rule, but has your friend actually been told by any banks here that they can't open an account for him more than 30 days after entry?
