Voodoo Lounge Closed

Goodby and good riddance as far as I am concerned. They weren't willing to control the volume, keeping people awake who live several blocks away.

Not sure what the true story is. My source said electricity cut by hotel because they want the building back.

God riddance for their 2 or 3 different price policy Resident/price, frequent tourist price and newbie prices.

Ladybird, they started off irresponsible with their loud music in an open building and ended irresponsible with the staff. Definitely not class group.

anyplace that has different prices shouldnt be open.you should offer the same prices to everyone and not try to gouge people. also treating their employees like that is uncalled for. they deserve to be closed.

Yes it was very bad, someone of them were owed past wages and one I know had 20 pesos to his name, not even enough for food. yes I did help.
I wouldn't help too much as the Dominican Labor Department is pretty efficient in getting employees their pay. As failure to pay wages is a criminal offense, most employers usually comply. In fact they have 10 days to pay up any liquidation which is due which would include any accrued vacation pay and Christmas bonus. If the employers are foreigners, chances are an Impedimento de Salida has already been filed to prevent them leaving the country. I find that most Dominican employees are very savvy of their labor rights.

It was not a Dominican that I helped, this closure affected ex pats as well. Some of them are nervous about going to the correct officials as they havent received their cedulas yet. The owner has already left the country and his new club The Velvet Glove is due to open on approx 15 October, this is where they have taken all the furnishings and stock.

Does anyone know if the expats need residency before they can ask the Ministry of Labour to help them with compensation?

The Fourth Principle of the Dominican Labor Code states the territoriality of the labor laws, which govern Dominicans and foreigners without distinction. I recently heard of a case where a casino was ordered by the Labor Department to pay an expat employee who they terminated over a million pesos in liquidation.

Immigration questions are handled by the Department of Immigration, not Labor. If this were ever referred to the Immigration Department, the employer could be subject to fine up to 35 times the employees monthly minimum salary plus the cost of extradition. I doubt the employer would be vindictive enough to seek the employees extradition as it would only cost him more.

The employees should see an attorney who is familiar with labor law. Most will work on a contingency basis. If they were not properly terminated and liquidated, they would be entitled to compensation until the date the case is finally decided as if they were still employed. The lawyer will also seek to sieze all the assets until this is settled.

It's across the street from Zoilo, but it's not the old Voodoo lounge, just the same owners I think. I think it's a vey different consept. Some kind of expensive "adult club" to say it nicely.

That would be owner, not owners, (plural). The new place is striving to be a high-end massage parlor. Call it what it is. I see it as a long process to actually open if it ever does at all, and will be about as popular as Seacrets, IMHO. (That's the way they spell Seacrets, not me). The Velvet Glove seems to have some thorns in the finger holes before it 'fits like a glove' here.
Also IMHO, the Voodoo was a great concept poorly executed, even if it did keep some folks awake later than they cared to be. Sorry Ken, et. al.

i beleive the true story is the voodoo folks were asked to leave when they refused to pay their 300,000 peso light bill they artfully dodged for quite some time. and are now concentrating on the casa de putas down in the lower end. "the rubber glove" or something.....
