True that. the only water problem I have is when I go back to the US, getting used to the tap water there, ususally ruins me for about 3 days. I use villar brothers here, cheaper and its close

When I arrived here I tried drinking tap water. Big mistake!! Had stomach pain for 1 week. Got a 5 gallon bottle and started to fill it up on some clean water machines all over town. Nevada's tap water really sucks.

which brings up the question of "potable" water

Is this another false friend in translation?

since in the US, "potable" water means water that is safe to drink...
Drinking water - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

whereas here there are often govt discussions and reports about "aqua potable" which is the water delivered from various rivers and resevoirs

Water supply and sanitation in the Dominican Republic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I laughed when I had a young British friend who had spent time both in Nicaragua and here.. and assumed that "potable" water was water that was ready to be put in a pot for boiling before drinking...

I know that there are plenty of places in the DR where the ground water is safe.. well water in Dajabon, for instance, is fine... but the ground water in Las Terrenas is very, very contaminated since there is a lot of construction in the swamps... (and the sewers were put right near the wells!) . This may be improving since they put in a sewage treatment plant a few years ago.. and the water on the hills is probably still good.....

The Filter that you refer to is available in Jarabacoa and you can see the website about the filter Filterpurefilters.org.

Hi all,

It's been years since I logged in-

As a preparedness/survival instructor, I teach filtration, treatment, then a second filtration when possible.

The products I am familiar with use chlorine dioxide (either drops or tablets) to treat the water for giardia etc and I use a particulate filter to get the solids out. There are many similar brands on the market. I've been a fan of Aquamira products for years.

I also found this machine online that pulls humidity from the air to create water! Home and Office : Atmospheric Water Generator : Drinking Water Dispenser | EcoloBlue? Life & Energy It is very cool technology. Or you may want to look at Berkey filiters Berkey Water Filter Models Comparison Page These have been popular for years and use UV light/filtration to purify your water.

Then there is always bleach!

1) 1 Gallon water is disinfected by 8-16 drops of regular household bleach (visually about 1/4 of a teaspoon) - double that for cloudy water. Shake and let stand 30 minutes. One teaspoon will disinfect 5 gallons. Immediately after treating, water must initially have a slight smell of chlorine. If it does not - repeat the process.

2) Regularly used water from large tanks may be treated once or twice a month with 1 Oz. bleach per 200 gallons or 5 Oz. bleach per 1000 gallons.

3) Bleach effectively kills bacteria and viruses, stops smells and then breaks down. It's effective germ killing alkaline property is completely neutralized very quickly. It does not stay chemically active in tanks for more than a few days. Most germs require sunlight to grow. Store water in the dark.

When I travel I carry a one litre "sport bottle" that has a filter in the neck. I add a water purification tablet to it, and in 30 minutes I have safe drinking water from just about anywhere--including the tap, in the DR. Always remember, filters don't always kill "germs", you must understand the type of filtration you have to know the type of treatment required to make safe, clean drinking water.

By a Osmose Filter unit . Its expensive but if you change Filters acc. to instructions you have save and good testing water. cost about US$600.

I havent really searched yet but does anyone know where is the best place to buy a Brita Filter and container for the fridge.
I will use it to double filter my 5 gallon jug water for drinking. I store my drinking water in the fridge so might as well put it in a better filter container.

OK... I know this is a years old thread, but I have a water question. I'm pretty new to using bottled water dispensers. Once you put the 5 gal. bottle on there, how long will it remain safe to use if just sitting there? I put a new bottle on my dispenser the first week of Jan. I'll be back there in June for the first time since Jan. Will my water still be good? Will the dispenser need to be cleaned out???

Most bottled water is processed by reverse osmosis. Any additional filtration is overkill.

Any bugs introduced into the water are from outside sources, like gunk from not cleaning the cooler regularly, or from not cleaning the air pump occasionally.

The clay filter does a fine job of filtration. We have one specifically for the dog's water.

Pyratt, thanks for the info on the bleach/water ratio. I now know how much to add to the cistern...

That will work for biological contamination, (although I've heard 15 mins.), but not for chemical and mineral contaminants.

What Cap. said, boiling won't get rid of copper or lead from the pipes, although most RD pipes are PVC.
