He has influence in Latin America because of his Peruvian citizenship and time spent as the Archbishop of Peru, but is linked to the church coverup of clergy sexual abuse in Peru. He was following the orders of the Popes. His social views are well known. A crusader for the rights of immigrants and climate change. He’s already head butted Trump and Vance on social media. No one expects him to make radical changes in the church. Bottom line, Windy, his rhetoric won’t change the direction of world politics. He will be a voice crying in the wilderness, like Pope Francis. The DR borders will remain closed.

The Catholic Church is waning in North America and I suspect in the DR. The Evangelical religions seems to be increasing slowly in the DR. A visit from Pope Leo might generate more temporary interest in the Catholic Church but I don’t think it would change anything. The Evangelicals seem to be more more involved at the DR community level which is why they are increasing in numbers.

Anyway, it isn’t clear if the current Pope has actual Dominican heritage. Everything is based on what someone that knows him said. It’s a she said, he said situation and very weird to find conflicting info on the place of birth of his mother and maternal grandfather. This is evidence of either fraud/falsified documents or someone isn’t telling the truth.

For the record, this document is from 1887, not during 1822-1844 when the entire island was Haiti. Native of Haiti means actual Haiti, not the Dominican Republic.
