OK. I have been told that in DR. if a guy does not know a girls name, he will say "hola amor" to greet her. And this is if they have never formally met type thing, just a stranger who is a female on the web.

Now to me, that sounds like a load of bs and I want to know what some of the dominicans here think about that. why not just say "hola chica"??

Don't take it serious, it's just a flirt, like "hello gorgeous", "hello sweetheart", its a complimentary greeting for certain situations.

What Ricardo900 said.

And...

One thing I notice is that girls here know how to take compliments.
They never assume it has an ulterior motive.

On my travels and living in the USA and Europe, that is not always the case.

I would think twice about telling a girl in the UK she has beautiful eyes or a great looking legs. But here... it's not a problem and the girls except it for what it is, a compliment.

How refreshing!!!!

Your right Robert there are some women who don't know how to take a compliment. I say thank you and smile! :) hee hee
I think if a guy is saying Hi beautiful there is nothing wrong with that. That's a nice thing to say. I've heard rude stuff in Canada so I don't understand why SallyAnne you think that was rude??

I've been stopped by men who compliment me in a polite way.
But I have experienced rude compliments as well. For the rude ones I just walk away or give them my your an asshole look ;)

My experiences so far in the DR mostly polite men and just a few experiences with agressive men but I know how to handle them. Nobody can mess with me I tell it like it is! :)

Yup

A friend (male) and I chat online from time to time and he always greets me that way (hola amor) and this is common - I use it with my girl friends too.

I'm a little uncomfortable with calling someone I don't know "love" or "sweetheart" but I know from experience that Dominicans do it all the time.

This is not to say he's not trying to pull the wool over your eyes. I had a friend who would sit next to her boyfriend while he was chatting to his 'friends' online ...... she understood most of what was being said and it was all innocent, but everyone of the girls on his messenger list was one of his girlfriends!!!! She wasn't very happy when she found THAT out.

But my point is that friendship is so friendly here that there is sometimes a fine line between boy-girl friendship and boy-girl relationship .... does this make any sense?

Stay well,
Amy

Amen Robert...If you said something like your two examples to a woman in the U.S. you had better take cover from the pepper-spray...not always but it is safe to err on the side of caution...

I like the fact that women here like getting compliments...many American women (obviously not all) think they have to make a choice between being empowered/professional or feminine...Latin women can pull of both and make it look easy...Gotta Luv'm

I have heard "Gracias Amor" on the telephone numerous times making reservations for something or another for upcomming trips from total strangers.

I take it as a casual word used between the opposite sexes liberally.

As wonderful as that is. This was said to a girl from Spain. so is that considered the UK (i didnt pass my countries test in highschool) so would a girl from spain take it differently? A latino friend of mine from chile thinks that if that was said it wasnt because he didnt know her name. and would you say "hola amor" as in gorgeous or sweetheart in a friendly compliment way to someone you have never seen so she really may not be gorgeous? i am a bit flustered right now if you couldnt tell.

You would even say it if the girl was ugly and fat and old and you knew her name ...... and she would take it as a compliment - that's the way Latinos are.

hehehe, give us the link .....
http://yeza.deviantart.com/ it is more towards the bottom, before the "you have been kissed" comment. she left me a comment saying in spanish "you are his girlfriend?? i am his girlfriend Ray is a lyer i feel sorry for you." and blah blah, she is an ex girlfriend and so he says she is trying to make him miserable, and she is doing a good job. and all the comments that evilsky wrote after the hola paloma (this is where he found out it was his ex gf cuz he "says" he didnt know before that) all the comments above that he has written i almost feel like he did it so i would feel better but i dont know whats real anymore and i would really like to find out.

Thus Spoke the Curmudgeon

If you didn't pass your geography test you will have not a clue as to what that title means.

No, Spain is not the UK. The UK is England.Edited to add: UK stands for United Kingdom. Scotland was united to England in 1603 when James I became king of both countries. Later Wales was added and Northern Ireland stayed with England after the "Uprising" in the 1920s I think. Anyway, those guys are right.

Now as to your problem.

The use of " Hola mi amor" is not a proper greeting to someone not your wife, fianc? or partner.
However, this is the Dominican Republic and many people with little or no "breeding" use the phrase very carelessly. It's just a fact of life here.

I am a crotchety old man and I get this "amor" all the time on the telephone from females I have never even met!.

BUT, after Miss Manners, I have to say that it is a handy weapon to use if you have forgotten the person's name. Of course, no real guy would call another guy "mi amor".....

As for your boyfriend, it probably is nothing, but let him know that you don't like the idea of him calling any other female "amor", because to you "amor" is for very special people...and you don't think that the person in Spain deserves that title of "love" ....If he doesn't listen then he is not worthy of you and you can find another fellow.

In actuality, the UK is a monarchy in northwestern Europe occupying most of the British Isles; divided into England and Scotland and Wales and Northern Ireland.
