What does RIU mean?

I just got back from a wonderful stay at the Riu Melao and I got
to thinking: "What does RIU mean?" Can anyone tell me?? Mil gracias. Punta Cana was fantastico!

Riu is the name of the Spanish family that started the hotel chain.
Riu has gone from being a small family business to an international family-run hotel chain.
