this will take quite some time....are you going to be driving?
If the answer is YES, then my guess 4 hour drive each way...anyone else want to chime in to answer cyberpropr's question? :ermm:

More like 5 or 6 hours with the new highway...

...and Ive never had a really good lobster in the DR, 90% of the time they are overcooked, dry, or too salty, and I have had them straight from the ocean and right from the tank...Dominicans don't seem to understand how to cook them.

And as for steaks, I agree that Los Locos de'enfrente has a great steak at a great price...but as was also mentioned Dominican beef does not taste like US Beef, so look for a place with Imported Beef...Cabarete Blu, and a few others on the beach offer it. That being said, as good as the Churasco is at Ali's (it's not Argentinian style churasco but very good), the filet is GREAT...almost tastes like USDA prime, at least the one time I had it, it did.

Also, Bliss, next to Los Locos has imported steaks and while they are fairly small, they are not too expensive and cooked perfectly, plus the ambiance is very different and more "upscale" than most restaurants in Cabarete or Sosua.

Thanks all. How long takes from Sosua to Bavaro?

Too long for a short stay. If I remember correctly, on another posting you mentioned you'll be in the north coast for five days or so. If you go by bus to Bavaro, you'll need to take two buses, one from Sosua to Santo Domingo, and then another one to Bavaro: 8 hours if not more. If you drive, it'll be a bit shorter, but still too far for a day trip.

The best steak I've had ANYWHERE including here in Canada was at La Papillon. It is on the left side of the highway leaving Puerto Plata, just before the entrance to Ocean World.

Le Papillon for sure, Even my friends from Atlanta who dine in great places there for steak love the Papillon and go there first every trip here. I have been going there for the last 10 years. Filet mignon..great. Opens around 6pm.

Not surprising you agree as you told us about it James! ;)
Hope all is well with you and the family and see if you can dry things up before we get back down there this summer.

Well, sad to say, went to Los Locos de'enfrente last week and is not what it used to be, it was one of my favorite places. The beef steak was actually bad. New BIG menues and smaller steak means higher prices I guess. 270, 350 and now 450 pesos. Sry not worth it.

To the OP,
la Casa del Pescador in Cabarete has very good lobster. they have a live tank where you can choose your own and they serve it halved and grilled. It was the best I've had so far. As for steaks I'm not much help but sounds like the others have some good suggestions, and btw Captain Cooks in Bavaro is awesome if you are ever in the area.

As to steaks, Both restaurants are off the beach. Ali's Surf Camp is at the end of Procab. .

The restaurant is no longer at the surf camp its on the beach at the eastern end. But, IMHO not as good since the move, you dont get the soup and salad anymore. Atmosphere not the same either, not having dinner with traveling surfers, which might not be of interest to you anyway. But no mosquitoes though, that was the only problem when at the camp.
