What's wrong with my pool filter?

My only criticism, and the same criticism I make about epoxy pool paint, is the floor becomes very slippery on bare feet, and I have to use water shoes for traction.

Of course, this is why algae won't grow on it: nothing to adhere to.

If you slip you are in the water. Just be careful on the steps - It's not that slippery when you are buoyant

The entire filter broke! Whilst trying to fix it, I removed the valve head and cleaned up the gasket. Then I thought I'd empty the sand to double check the laterals. They appeared ok, even the one I repaired with this new fancy epoxy called "Pegua Tanque". I refilled the sand and whilst doing so, the fibreglass bowl split at the bottom and spilled sand all over the pump house.

So I've fixed my filter problem. I bought a new one! A plastic one this time. Although the fibreglass one was over twenty years old.

20 years is quite impressive. A lot of sand-to-(old tech) fiberglass erosion can happen in 20 years.

Does the new filter actually remove the fine dust?

If it does after a month or two, then that is interesting.

What model did you end up with? My filter is also in the 20 year old range.

I ended up buying a Pentair Sand Dollar filter 270lbs. Best price was at the new ferreteria after the traffic lights in Cabarete. It used to be called Freddy, but now has a new name and ownership. They price matched of all the ferreterias between Cabarete and Sosua. 17,500 pesos.

pool is crystal clear now.

Yep, I hear ya. I tick both boxes.

Everything breaks! Everything. Even stainless steel rusts!

The price you pay to live in paradise!

Clorine might save you

It sounds like you need to apply a clorien "Shock Treatment" to your pool.
There are many instructions online on how to do it. But make sure to get rid of the high level of clorine before using it again.

My pool is going cloudy. I get a build up of algae on the bottom. If I vacuum in filter mode, I see all the gunk I've vacuumed off the bottom pump straight out of the jets back into the pool.

I thought that perhaps it was because the sand in my filter was around five years old. I replaced the sand, but it's still the same.

Even if I leave the pump running for some time with the cloudy water, it doesn't clear. I even tried doing a backwash, and the water coming out through the sight glass is clean.

What could be wrong?
