On Wedneday, 3 April 2024 users of Whatsapp noticed the smartphone messaging platform was not working. The duration of the outage varied, and for many was back from minutes to an hour. Later it was known the Meta Platforms-owned WhatsApp service had been disrupted for thousands of people globally.
In the Dominican Republic, Whatsapp is the online platform of choice for Dominicans to communicate. The downing of the service served as a reminder to people on how dependent they have become on the service for communicating with clients and suppliers, family and friends.
In the DR the service was down in the early afternoon when users found themselves unable to send or receive messages.
As reported, the outage also affected the services of Instagram and Facebook with tens of thousands reporting issues worldwide.
