One of the most important things to me when I move to Santo Domingo is to find a good place that knows how to teach the martial art called Muay Thai. I have studied three other martial arts such as Karate and Kung-Fu but I am most interested in attaining the master level in Muay Thai. When I am not working at my job in Santo Domingo or at the beach, I want study this particular form of martial art called Muay Thai.

In Dominican Republic Villa Altagracia Call: Tony Baez, Tel: 559-2821 Bonao Call: Jose Melo (Hongo) Tel: 525-8912

You may need to travel a bit but MMA is getting big in the Capital and as a result, there is plenty of opportunity to practice, train and spar there even if the specific discipline instruction which you seek is unavailable.

Last Feb/Mar I flew back on the same flight with a bunch of US MMA contestants and according to them (between them spitting teeth and wiping blood from various orifices) Santo Domingo's boxing colliseum is a very attractive venue which is now hosting some very successful MMA competitions. The "sport" seems to be becoming very popular with young Dominicans and the colliseum is establishing itself as one of the premier "on the way up the ranks" stops on the MMA circuit.

You can get more current info from local promotions there.

These guys were on my flight:

There's a growing market for MMA in the D.R. and plenty of opportunity but there is also a big problem that could bring it all to a screeching halt. It seems that some of the promoters in the DR have been less than scrupulous with the fighters' pay. These are the last guys I'd want to bounce a check on:

Hopefully they'll sort it out and get the bad elements out so that the sport can continue to thrive there. It's not really my bag as I hate seeing what these guys are doing to themselves for peanuts but it's keeping guys in the dojo and out of the streets so there is a social benefit there.

Moves to the D.R this summer
@greydread - that's some great info! I've been looking around for MMA in SD and I'm happy to hear it's becoming more popular! We move to SD in the end of 2012 and my fianc?e is hoping to continue his training there.
