Can you help me out with your advice? We are coming to the DR in mid-June, staying at a rented villa for a week while attending a wedding. No idea whether they have screens in the villa. But we are northerners and will want the windows open at night.

Would you advise us to get some mosquito nets and bring them with us? I see we can get a queen-size for about $40 CDN from Mountain Equipment here in Ottawa. So are the little buggers still likely to be a problem in mid-June? I'd rather pay $40 than come home with Dengue.
if they do not provide might want to buy and bring. I am not finding much of selection. Certainly no king size and the queen I did find isn't really a queen (more like a full size) nor good quality.

You may find mosquito net in every mid size store at $5 for a queen size. Less for single $4 and more for king $6 average ( 5 and 15 store, La Sirena, Louis, El playero, ect.....).There is a standart one that you fix at 4 angles with a rubber band to place around the matress. You find them in different colors.

I still want to find a frame that attaches to the back of the headboard and cantilevers over the bed.

Long time ago I screwed cup hooks into the wall over the bed, stitched cord (any mercer? has it) along the topsides, and stretched it to opposite wall where there already was something to fasten it on. Ceiling fan above then worked fine.

The mosquito nets are not going to help you against Dengue. The Dengue carrying mosquito bites bite during the daytime

Dengue virus is primarily transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, particularly A. aegypti.[2] These mosquitoes usually live between the latitudes of 35? North and 35? South below an elevation of 1,000 metres (3,300 ft).[2] They typically bite during the day, particularly in the early morning and in the evening.[1

Thank you all for your help, so far. Your reports say this is a bad year for mosquitoes. Do you think this will be the situation in mid-June? We are all from Canada, and have mosquito problems here every spring, anywhere outside cities. We've all had experience with the little buggers. I'll pack some DEET-based repellent, because mountainAnnie, you're saying we need to repel the daytime Dengue mosquitoes, right?

But whether the bugs carry Dengue or not, nobody likes trying to sleep with the teasing whine of mosquitoes...

Two of our group are over 75 years old. I feel I am kind of the sherpa on this trip, as they have never been to the DR. I'd rather buy the nets and load up on DEET to keep them safe and happy, if that's what it takes. Great suggestion about contacting the condo-people - it's Infiniti-blu in Sosua. I'll see what they say. Anything else you can tell me about the mosquitoes (or anything else you think we should know) I would really appreciate.

You also buy aerosol cans of insect repellent from any small supermarket and many colmados. You close all the windows spray and leave the house for a few hours. It's effect lasts quite a few days, unfortunately it will also kill the tarantulas.

You probably meant insecticide, because repellent doesn't kill them.

Alfie, I would def bring my own net and some cans of repellent with at least 40% DEET. The last thing you want to do is get there and have to worry about scrambling around town finding these items. I prefer to arrive and relax...

For the locals, best money I ever spent was getting screens on all the windows. I did get the magic doorway screen while back, its great. It just isnt that tall, so expect to figure out how to extend it so it covers the whole doorway.

Almost forgot, get a can of non expanding insulation foam for the cracks around windows and doors, and get that foam tube thingie that slides under the door to seal the bottom of the door against drafts. Take that f**king cacatas!

I gave up finding the longer, bigger nets here and ordered from Amazon. They sell the kind that hang from a ring for as little as $10. Easily pack in your suitcase! Adequate for a queen size bed, would work for a short trip for a king size too.

But, long term for king bed, you would want the rectangular kind that hangs from 4 or more points. Those cost a bit more esp. if you buy the most generous ones, which you will want for ease of use, effectiveness.

Working on various methods of suspension for both types/sizes at our house now. I will report back when I have best practices to share.

i know that la sirena in POP has them. look at the boxes: different sizes for different beds. most popular is the stuff you tie into bed posts. i have not seen the one hanging from the ceiling...

LOL..............Just what exactly are we talking about here? ;)

Thanks to all for your advice. I'll bring the nets with me, as I can easily buy them here in Ottawa - we're just coming into our spring mosquito (and other bugs) season here. Might have forgotten the citronella candles, but you folks reminded me. Thanks for that!
