where to stay and where to party in santo domingo??

Hello everyone.

My names Robbie. Im a 25 year old law student from New York City coming down to DR next friday and spending 9 days there. I plan on spending both weekends in Santo Domingo. I speak spanish pretty well and will be travelling alone. I heard Santo Domingo is an incredible city not to be missed.

Since I have not been there I dont know where to stay or where to party.

What is the best neighborhood to stay in where I will be close to all the nightlife and in a safe nice neighborhood. Do you have any reccomendations for a hotel or an apartment where I can stay on march 9th-11th or 12th.

I do not want to spend too much money maybe 30 or 40 bucks tops per night, What is the best neighborhood to stay in

Also what are the best clubs in Santo Domingo.

I am looking for the clubs with the most beautiful women, i dont mind paying a bit more for drinks for the trendy clubs in santo domingo, as I will be spending the restr of the time in DR roughing it in the countryside.

Hi Robbie:

I have been to SD 3 times in the past 1 year and I am going back for my 4th trip on April 16th - 29th. Normally I always stay at the Jarragua, which is a very nice hotel near the water in SD. It is one of the most expensive properties in town, but I wanted to splurge during those trips. Now when I come back in April, I plan on doing it a bit different. My plans call for me to arrive and stay at the hotel Mecure which in on El Conde in the colonial zone. This is where 90% of the action is in SD. The rate that I have for the hotel with tax comes to $57 USD. Please note that I only plan to stay there for one night. Then my remaining 12 nights will be staying at a place called Maison Gautreaux. This is like a rooming house/hotel. I have never stayed there before but I hear grreat things about it. The cost is $30 USD per day and I have a private single room with bath and it is safe, clean, and comfortable. I too am a single black guy from Providence, RI and love all that SD has to offer. Unfortunatley, I do not speak any spanish at all. You will really have a good time while you are there. Just keep in mind that are a guest in the country and be smart and safe! - Good Luck. I guess you haven't spent much time in SD. El Conde, are you kidding me!

Good Advice - What's up with the folks in the pictures?

Your advice with the brochure is good. However, I did not know that that area exists. Since the brochure is in spanish, It is difficult for me to understand/read - do you have or know of a english version? - Also, Odd that the folks in all of the photographs don't look ANYTHING like the average people in Santo Domingo. I have been all of the place and those folks look like the types that are hand-picked to be in photographs. Most people around are much darker in skin complexion. Odd that EVERYONE in those brochure pictures are light skin and look like those that you see on those telelvision shows. - Not to say that there is anything wrong with this, it just seems to be little "Commercialized"

Brochure??? http://bonche.com is a website about nightlife, lots of pages, photos and info.

They are not hand picked, you're just hanging out in the wrong places.
I suggest you get out more and mix with various classes of Dominicans not just those that hang out around El Conde.

these are the "better" clubs where the middle to upper class hangs out, if you go to Santiago, you'll also find these types of clubs, everyone "dresses to kill" all the girls are beautiful and the guys are ok looking.

Are there any event listings on bonche.com? I couldn?t seem to find any. So far I?ve got a few places scoped out during the week. Loft on Sundays, Trio or Monte Cristo onTuesdays, Tao Wednesdays, Thursdays there are a few places. Weekends I usually leave town. Is there anything going on on a monday other than Jet Set? Does red room have any good week nights? I like to go out, and in a sense the 12am curfew isn?t so bad in that I know I wont be wrecked for the next morning when I have to work.

I have been to Loft - fun place with lots of young attractive people. They play sort of techno music - not my favorite. This place is really crowded and people have a lot of fun. In terms of skin shades - there were some very light skinned ones, but only a few.

I was there on Saturday - only techno music. In terms of skin shades - I have no idea what you mean ... I don't pay attention to this, but lots of people in that place were very very attractive... In general there are lots of beautiful people in the DR, that is for sure.

Yeah, agreed on the beautiful people at loft, I took my brother who was visiting there - his comments were "so I take it you?re not leaving this place??". As for my comment on the "piel bueno", I too don?t make any importance with skin colour, but here it seems that they do. The lighter your skin is the more "bueno" it is, same with hair, the straight hair is "pelo bueno" very straight and light is "pelo muy bueno", if its curly its "malo", very curly and black it?s "pelo muy malo". Wierd considering that I was told this by a mulato, and considering that most of the population has african descent that they would give it such importance. But hey, I?m not going to fight it, my skin and hair are "muy bueno"

Yes, I noticed - some girls have their hair straightened and color it blond. I have no idea why to do it - they a beautiful just the way they are ... But in general I sort of felt out of place in the Dominican Republic, being too white - had no time to get some sun I loved looking at their olive skin - something I will never have ...
