This thread has been a major flashback to the late 1970s, when the big supermarkets hadn't opened yet and turkeys were hard to come by in SD. Two girlfriends lived in SD at the time, and I can remember a bunch of us getting on a plane at JFK on Wednesday before Thanksgiving, carrying a big frozen turkey over a shoulder to go and celebrate together. No one batted an eye at SDQ.

One of those girlfriends still lives in SD - she introduced me to my husband there, back on Thanksgiving Day 1975.

Feeling rather old today - where did the years go???
Back in those days we also had to carry a case of Tab (Diet Coke hadn't been invented yet). There was no diet soda in the DR at that time.

Maybe an abuelo, but you can't beat the old commercials.

And you are still alive to post about it?
Good luck to all those importing beef. I don't think I would ever go that far.

I guess you just carry the meat and hope for the best.

BTW, the US has lifted the ban on importing Cdn beef.
UK beef is still forbidden to enter USA - customs man told me that the other day. Its new news

~We are bringing our own meats frozen packed in our check luggage this time, it is the first time we are attempting this, however we know we could have it taken from us~ We unfortunately are spoiled by good US beef and other meat products so we are taking our chance in January....it would be for our own consumption while we are there, along with other products we are accustom to in the US....

~We come into Punta Cana airport and nine times out of ten the porters scap us up and wisk us to the Apple Vacations counter and we never go through customs even though we are not traveling with Apple or on a tour etc.....just "oh jeez you miss understood us....;) then we proceed with our private transports to our Casa...:bunny:

The Difference Between Republicans and Democrats

A Republican and a Democrat were walking down the street when they came to a homeless person. The Republican gave the homeless person his business card and told him to come to his business for a job. He then took twenty dollars out of his pocket and gave it to the homeless person.

The Democrat was very impressed, and when they came to another homeless person, he decided to help. He walked over to the homeless person and gave him directions to the welfare office. He then reached into the Republican’s pocket and got out twenty dollars. He kept $15 for administrative fees and gave the homeless person five.

Now you understand the difference between Republicans & Democrats.

A lady goes into the butcher shop and as she is walking around the store, she spies a beef tongue in the butcher's counter. The lady asks, "What in the world is that?"

" Beef tongue," replies the butcher!

The lady gives a little involuntary shudder, "No way would I put anything in my mouth that came out of an animal's mouth!"

The butcher nods sympathetically while peeking into the woman's shopping cart, "I see you're buying a dozen eggs!"

Beef tongue is good.... where is it in RD??

In years gone by, several 'less desirable' parts of the animal were enjoyed in places like Scotland by the lower economic levels.
Things like tongue, shank, etc.

Good food at a reasonable price.

Where is this stuff in RD??

Cheaper, good for you food. The tongue is extremely low fat and boils down to a good meal.

That's what you get when you put Tea Party Republicans in a meat grinder. :knockedou:knockedou:knockedou

It's better than having these tree loving socialist arses. If you Work for a living, you will love capitalism! Maybe you can all get your free pollo soon.

You can get raw beef tongue at Supermercado Meson in Puerto Plata. In the US raw beef tongue sells for about $10/pound. About $1/pound in the DR.

A trick I learned on cooking beef tongue. Bring it to a boil in large pot. Discard water and replace with fresh water. Bring to a boil again and boil until fork tender. Changing the water makes the tongue less salty.

When tongue is tender, make a mild tomato sauce laced heavily with a portugese madera wine, and add mushrooms. Delicious!!!!

Where does this politico sh*t enter my cooking class...

Shame on you - where's the 'Wud when we need to rein in the raff and riff?

Beef, etc
The price of all offals have gone up - what was affordable is now elite !!??

Lamb kidneys - any kidneys - they used to throw them away.
Now , mucho dinero.

Yup, tongue is good - if you have a slow cooker/crockpot cooker - you're in heaven.
Slow and long cooking is good for tongue.

As an aside to the main event...
I will be smuggling meat in a la jrjrjrjrjththth

I did it in Mexico once - I had the Christmas roast of beef for 8 people.
Must have been a 12-15 pounder or more.
Like a pair of ski boots.

The customs people had never seen such a slab of meat.

What's this? they ask
"Christmas dinner" , I answer

I went right through. Still frozen on arrival.
We cooked the roast and we enjoyed it.

Wish me luck

Close 'er up 'Wud
