I have used Telus and it does work. The Punta Cana area uses CDMA and GSM. The roaming partner that Telus uses in that area is Verizon. The rate last month was $1.49 US/min

I had my telus phone with me now and it does not work. When I call I get this spanish speaking message.

hey I have the same exact phone with rogers. I am in jarabacoa now. My was a pay as you go account. However it does not work for me. i was wondering is it because it is pay as you go from canada chip. or really bad connection in jarabacoa? it says emergency only. matbe i have to have a monthly account with rogers to have it work. will it work when i take it to orange to activate it?

Pay as you go won't even roam in the US let alone worldwide. You need a monthly account. Keep in mind unless you activate it with a GSM provider in the DR, e.g. Orange if you DO roam prepare to see roaming fees of $2.00 or more a minute incoming or outbound even local.

For the cost of a few calls it is always cheaper (also pay as you go with cards) to buy an Orange phone in the DR and use that with cards than ever using your own with roaming.

yeah but those are larger size phones. Flip phones cost more like $70 to $100+.

The purpose of the phone is to call people - you are there a week, or so, who cares how big it is? use your phone and pay octuple then, it really matters not.

Most people in Jarabacoa(that i know) use Orange, but codetel work fine also. I know that my rogers cell works there, but it was expensive. How are you enjoying Jarabacoa so far? I wish I was there, but can't go until July.

Jarabacoa is great. I am loving it here. Kind cool weather here. Perhaps we will run into each other around july then.
