Why do Dominicans hate the Yankees?

What a silly argument. It's an over generalization. If Dominicans hate the Yankees, it's the same reason other fans hate the Yankees. The money issue, etc. The "Evil Empire" blah blah blah.....As per the argument with the cab driver, your first defense shouldn't have been about the game, rather that Dominicans aren't a race.

Well, actually, the more I look at it the more they could be called a race of their own....

Mr. Lu

Senor Lu,

Read back to the first post. I base this on my personal experience with Dominicans that say they "HATE" the Yankees - all give me the same reason - they don't have or haven't had enough Dominican players.

I do agree...it is a silly argument. But that's what baseball is all about hehehe:cheeky:

Can you even name a team that doesn't have a Dominican player on it?

Chip the hate toward the Yankees didn't start today, it goes back to the 70's and 80's. Back in those days we barely had players in the Major League let along the Yankees.

Take a look a the roster of the Yankees in those two decades;

1970 New York Yankees Roster by Baseball Almanac

zero Dominican player.

1971 New York Yankees Roster by Baseball Almanac

1 Dominican; Felipe Alou but just a shadow of his former self.

1972 New York Yankees Roster by Baseball Almanac

Again only Felipe.

1973 New York Yankees Roster by Baseball Almanac

Two players; Felipe and Mateo Alou, both washed out and about to retire. Neither were regulars.

1974 New York Yankees Roster by Baseball Almanac

1975 New York Yankees Roster by Baseball Almanac

1974 and 1975 zero Dominican players.

1976 New York Yankees Roster by Baseball Almanac

This year they had Juan Bernhardt; but he wasn't popular in DR and only played 10 games.

1977 New York Yankees Roster by Baseball Almanac

Zilch players from DR.

1978 New York Yankees Roster by Baseball Almanac

This year they had Domingo Ramos (played only one game) and Damaso Garcia. Garcia couldn't become a regular in two years, was traded to Toronto and became a superstar. In the eyes of Dominicans the Yankees never gave him a chance.

1979 New York Yankees Roster by Baseball Almanac

Only Damaso.

1980 New York Yankees Roster by Baseball Almanac

Not even one.

1981 New York Yankees Roster by Baseball Almanac

None.

1982 New York Yankees Roster by Baseball Almanac

1983 New York Yankees Roster by Baseball Almanac

82 and 83 they only had Juan Espino, a backup catcher who did nothing to remember him.

1984 New York Yankees Roster by Baseball Almanac

This year they had Jose Rijo, another case of a player who couldn't make it with the Yankees, got traded and became a superstar. In 1990 he was the MVP of the World Series playing for the Cincinati Reds.

1985 New York Yankees Roster by Baseball Almanac

This year they had Victor Matta, who in two years collected only 77 AB, so not likely Dominicans care about him.

1986 New York Yankees Roster by Baseball Almanac

None.

1987 New York Yankees Roster by Baseball Almanac

Only a washed out Cecilio Guante.

1988 New York Yankees Roster by Baseball Almanac

Three washed out; Guante, Hipolito Pe?a and "Prendalinda" Santana.

1989 New York Yankees Roster by Baseball Almanac

This year they had Luis Polonia and for the first time since 1974 the had a player who was popular among Dominicans.

Now compare that to the record of the Dodgers, Pirates, Expos, Blue Jays, Astros ect hiring Dominicans, not only the amount, but players who were popular and Dominicans could feel proud of.

you can keep all these stats to yourself...there is only one reason behind all of this "YANKEES SUQ!!! jejejej.

It was difficult being a sox fan while living in nyc. I would walk around NYC with bo sox "yankee hater" tee shirt and i get harrassed all the time.

But it is quite true tho. While I am in the D.R....EVERYONE roots for the Sox.

IF there are any NYC red sox fan...the best bar to go to is the Riviera Sport Bar on Seventh avenue near christopher street. TONS of sox and pats fans there.

True tho...not to many dominicans on the sox's roster these days. But perhaps because they were one of the first teams to have a major dominican line up...i am sure that is where the local interest comes from.

MFYs in the series

...to the OP, I bet the Dominicans love the MFYs now.

Absolutely unwatchable with football on at the same time.

I hear this more and more, but I'm starting to wonder if baseball is actually dying off. I think they need to shorten the season and get it out of football's way.

Unless you're from NY, not many people were watching this game. I'll bet - my left arm - that in the Los Angeles TV market, the football game will get a better rating than the Angels baseball game (AZ/NYG).

I'll post the numbers when I get them.

Sorry didn't read the thread but, I will tell you why I will support red soxs from now on.
My man Julian tavarez (red sox pitcher and current agulias pitcher) gave me a new aguilas cap and a XL T-shirt with # 50 and his name on the back. He is a supper cool guy.

When he was playing for the Sox I heard a few interviews with him and he left a very good impression. He's had some gnarly incidents on the field, but the Red Sox loved having him (from what I heard/read), his life story is fascinating as well.

Yankees represent everything wrong with baseball
Columnist Nico Savidge discusses the problems with rooting for the Yankees

As I watched the New York Yankees celebrate their Game 6 ALCS victory and trip to the World Series, it finally hit me why they are the franchise I hate most in all of sports.

For years, there has been no team I despise more than the Yankees?more than the college rivals I?ve cheered against like Minnesota or Stanford, more than the Oakland Raiders and certainly more than any other baseball team.

Now I see why I hate the Yankees so much: They symbolize everything that is wrong with Major League Baseball, and embody all of the qualities that drew me away from the game in the first place. From terrible owners to inflated payrolls to gaudy stadiums, the Yankees have them all.

Let?s start with domineering owner George Steinbrenner. His style of management has already made him a caricature in the minds of many fans, and you would be hard-pressed to find any owner that fans and players hate more than him.

With the possible exception of Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis or former Cincinnati Reds owner Marge Schott, can you think of an owner who made himself more of a story than the team as much as Steinbrenner has?

Steinbrenner?s method of signing players to absurd contracts, making it impossible for smaller teams to compete, is another one of baseball?s issues the Yankees employ.

You could say I?m just a bitter fan of a ?Moneyball? team who is tired of seeing his team?s best players bought up by the Yankees. But they essentially bought their American League Championship this year, and if they win the World Series they will have their inflated payroll to thank for that as well.

The Yankees pluck the best players from clubs all around baseball, pulling them away from fans with massive salary offers no one can compete with. I?m not an advocate for a baseball salary cap, but you would be hard pressed to find a better argument in favor of it than the ?Evil Empire.?

The new Yankee Stadium even takes those terrible qualities from the field to the stands.
I made my view of absurd new stadiums clear a couple of weeks ago, and there is no bigger offender than the Yankees? new home. After tearing down a shrine to baseball history, they erected a new one bowing down to everything that is wrong about modern baseball stadiums.

Of course, there are the now-famous ?Legends Suite? tickets, which cost $1,250 per game?after the Yankees halved the ticket cost when they realized people wouldn?t pay $2,500 for one baseball game, absurd ticket prices aren?t the only terrible thing about the new Yankee Stadium. The stadium is an awful attempt to create a sense of history in a gaudy new park, while the whole building is plastered with obtrusive advertisements.

This is by no means a complete list of the Yankees? terrible attributes?let?s not forget that the Yankees have an admitted steroid user leading their offense, their broadcasters (specifically John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman) are some of the biggest homers in baseball, and their fans are some of the worst in all of sports.

People don?t hate the Yankees because they?re jealous of them. Sure, I would love for my team to win 26 World Series titles, or possibly 27 depending on the next couple of weeks, but the real reason people despise the Yankees is because of what they represent.

A Republican friend of mine jokes that he likes the Yankees because they represent everything that?s good about big business: they have the most money, so they get the best talent and win world championships at the expense of smaller teams.

He?s right: the Yankees are the sports equivalent of a massive corporation, dominating their competition and stuffing their own pockets with championships. Their owner?s style, player acquisitions and even stadium are all part of an homage to the absurd wealth that has so deeply impacted baseball.

Teams like the Yankees have caused me to drift further and further from baseball in the past five years, and they embody everything I can?t stand about what the sport has become.

Yes, he is a super cool guy who has not forgotten his friends in santiago. he comes and stays at his mom's house or in gran almirante hotel (paid by baseball team). He always invites his friends to come and spend time with him, gives away free tickets to the game and caps and T shirts. He talks to everyone and treats everyone good. I will contact aquilas to see if they will hire me as their chiropractor as many American players seem to need my services. Julian was interested. Seems like many players hate the team president (Mr. llenas) but I have no choice but to talk to him. So lets see what happens.

Not his words

My response to jaguarbob's tirade against the Yankees is simple. I understand, but I don't care. Go Yankees. I hope they win the world series.
Those weren't 'jaguarbob's' words, but i agree with you, I don't care either.

The MFY's will lose nearly - possibly over - $50 million this year, but they are in their bazillionith World Series. Good for them, well no, good for their fans. At least they care about winning, that's exciting for their community/fandom.

Minnesota/Florida Marlins and even Pittsburgh will make close to what the MFYs lose in net profit this year. I may be wrong, but that's BEFORE the luxury tax is added on to that.

Business-wise, the small market teams are the most profitable, the Sox/MFYs/Phillies and the rest of the big-market teams lose money.

Read Forbes (the article is titled something like the "Business of Baseball").

The MFY's are EASY to dislike for their ridiculous spending, but they give a damn because their fandom demands it.

Minnesota has something like 20 of the top 50 or 100 most profitable companies in the country, yet they're considered "small market". That's a fallacy supported - or more likely 'purported' - by their owners. He's not a billionaire by accident. He's gauged what the fans will buy.

As one of my (newest) favorite athletes likes to say (and former Minnesota property) ..."STRAIGHT CASH HOMEY". (Randy Moss)
