Retired muckraking journalist Marino Zapete defended the RD$190,000 privileged pension his wife, Dorka Quezada Felix, reportedly a 20-year employee of the National Telecommunications Institute (Indotel), has received. Pensions for regular people are low in the Dominican Republic, falling most of the time well below the last paycheck. Frequently, the Presidency authorizes attractive retirement plans to compensate persons in the government’s special favor.

Zapete recently retired from his El Jarabe talk program stating that he was leaving the job to the young people. Regarding the recent government privilege benefiting his wife, he said that he did not traffic in influence.

Zapete said that he had no official information about the pension, and that if his spouse had been awarded the pension as reported, it would be up to her to decide to accept the pension or not.

Extremely high and undeserved, even if she had two jobs, one of which was as a singer for the Compañía Lírica Nacional, a glamour "job".

And in a classic case of Aúnque Ud. no lo crea:

Abinader has also approved extremely high pensions for Johnny Vnetura's widow and Fefita la Grande, the former a life partner to a merengue icon, the latter a típico music performer who still tours and works gigs.

I assume the pension amount is monthly and that is a very unusual situation when a person receives more than 94 % of her last salary . However, I believe this is not uncommon as I know numerous retired government officials living in circumstances of great wealth. The tragedy is that for most of the retired Government workers the pension is very low but often is augmented by free water and electricity .
