Every time I have seen a Dominican cook something they always add this "cajita de sopita." Some kind of powder in a little yellow box that is usually by the register of a supermarket.

I think what you're talkin about is Sazon. Goya and Knorr are the brands I use. It's mainly used for making yellow rice, but it can be added to other foods to give them taste and color. They come in envelopes and are reddish in color. If that's not it then you might be thinkin of sopitas like Chris just said.

For yellow/red food coloring another natural, and in my opinion better, alternative is bija or annatto seeds.

Saffron

Hi!

It could be that mixture of spices such as Adobo or Maggi, but my Dominican friends use saffron a lot too. It's more expensive up here in the states, so they always bring it from the DR. Hope this helps!

Careful with that stuff, those little sopitas are all MSG!

Yep, that's right. Although the jury is still out on MSG, I have been avoiding the stuff, specially now that my son eats table food (oh how do I miss the days of exclusive breastfeeding - it was so much easier!)

For coloring and for marinating (pollo guisado for instance), I do use Adobo (sparingly) which does not contain MSG and Lea & Perrins worcestershire sauce. Good ol' tomato paste and annatto always do the trick when I want a little bit more color.

By the way, there is one brand of sopita that I have found which does not contain MSG. It comes in a jar and it is in powder form, not cubes. The name right now I do not recall.

Sazon

it's 2 different things.
1 sazon ranchera. It is a red liquid sold in bottles.
2.Sopita. Usually maggie brand.
They both go in almost every dominican food. Sazon ranchera has adobo in it.
By the way, I have never heard of a Dominican dish called "yellow rice". I have heard of lorio, moro, chofan etc. (just getting a jab in).
