You THINK Puerto Plata is amazing?!

I'm debating that why DR govt don't do anything even the mayor or whatever. They think resorts and hotels and cruise is important? That is the problem

Puerto Plata cruise ship passengers are picked up in the best of taxis and buses and tour only areas the government wants them to see. Same for passengers at the Maimon cruise ship port. The government spent a lot of money to cap the waste in the landfill near the Maimon cruise ship post. It was an obvious eyesore easily viewed by cruise ship passengers. Capping it only lasted a short time because tires and persistent plastics resurface. Eventually they had to spend more money to dig out the waste and relocate it. I passed by it many times on my way to Imbert and Luperon. It was interesting to watch.

What exactly are we debating? It is a bunch of garbage washed up ashore. Does that make Puerto Plata not amazing? Not pretty but garbage washes up in a lot of places in the DR.

Could be washed up garbage, however lots of beaches in the DR have minimal garbage ----- not counting touristy places that are cleaned up, but semi-deserted beaches.

So I would venture that the waste comes from POP.
And it's shameful.

Sad but not uncommon, personally I'm thinking the photo was after some recent heavy rains. I lived in Coson (Las Terrenas) for several years and once after severe torrential rains, 12 days of deluge or so the entire Playa Coson looked like that, all of Las Terrenas looked like that in fact.
For obvious reasons they started cleaning from the center of town outwards so it took awhile for the authorities to get out to Playa Coson but it quickly was all back to the pristine beaches we all know & love. On a side note, the dog looks quite comfortable with his lunch on his Sealy mattress

It is NOT washed up Garbage , it is 99.999 % coming from that River .. People use a River as a Garbage dump, never giving it a second thought that it will flush out into the Ocean. and any adjacent Beaches They just cant seem to grasp that simple concept .

If you notice the sea is quite brown near the coast when normally the Puerto Plata coast has tints of blue and looks clear and inviting. In other words, this is probably due to the recent flooding.

Look at that same beach from Google Earth. All that garbage should had been visible even from satellites given the size.

Wherever it came from, it's obvious that Pto. Plata couldn't care less about cleaning it up. What a disgrace.

Here can see the beach was dirty before (2021) and then looked clean and had sand added (2023). Ironically, the opposite is true with the tiny beach on the other side of the river meeting the ocean. My guess is they took the sand from the tiny beach and added to the one obviously used by that barrio. They probably took extra sand from the beach that used to be where the port was extended to.

The whole population tosses trash in the streets, sidewalks, forests & beaches. It’s a national problem. Not just Puerto Plata. The population is not motivated enough to clean up, thinking it’s futile.

From every moto, taxi, guagua, truck and household in DR - it's common place to see every person in DR (not gringos) tossing their trash wherever they finish with it.
The concept of paying for trash or actually making an effort to go to a trash receptacle is considered bourgeoisie

That would take an effort. How about making a workforce of Haitians and paying them to beautify the country. They are part of this garbage problem

You can’t jam millions of people into a coastal zone, people who throw their waste everywhere, cover everything with concrete and pavement, and be surprised when this to happens. Other countries have the same problems, Thailand, etc. Many island nations in the South Pacific are far from pristine. On Playa Dorada beach which is kept very clean, all you have to do is walk past the El Pueblito beachfront and continue towards Puerto Plata. The debris starts at that point.

I remember about 10 years ago before I moved here, I was staying at the BeDead, errrr....... I mean BeLive in PP; one day I walked not far on the beach to the west and came upon an astounding mountain of plastic; and I don't call Boca Chica, 'Basura Chica", for nothing

Actually this images are very good news !
Dominican authorities start acting only when it hurts ($$$). If some Big News Networks pick up this images or future ones, DR Tourism will take a great hit and than they will start moving their ass.
