I think that's a valid consideration... The expectations of people.

My point is that my expectations are tightly aligned to how much I'm paying. If it's US$ 50 a night then hey ho, whatever they throw at me works. If it's US$ 900 a night it had better be pretty damn amazing.

I got that, it's a common explanation... A person has their expectations linked to their opinion of the value they relate to the money they have an spend.

But your expectation of what $900 should get you may not be the same as the expectation of someone else... That was my point.

I've met very wealthy people who were pretty much as to what elegance actually is. They thought elegance was a matter of how expensive something was... Therefore, their expectation wasn't based on elegance, but on cost.

Many years bought a turtle shell pendant (farmed turtle for this purpose, and for meat) from a rasta jeweler in Negril, Jamaica. It was quite unique/beautiful, almost like a sunrise. It was a little raw in finish but I was able to negotiate a really low price for it. I polished it, put a nice gold clasp on it, placed it in a classy-looking box, and gave it as a gift to someone. She thought it was a way more costly piece than it was. She didn't ask me how much I paid for it, she simply applied the value of her emotional response to it.

My point is... Expectations are usually linked to subjective feelings... And so the matter of value can be as well.

When my parents got married they flew a Stratocrusier from NYC to London for their honeymoon... My mom has always said that she thought it was only second to a 1st class cabin on a cruise liner... And she wasn't referring to Carnival or similar.

I logged into to say that was a very elegant way of breaking down value.

When went to the delta museum in Atlanta, I couldn't believe how big the Pan-Am was. The luxuries they provided on those planes is similar to 5 stars / VIP at Vegas.

I had the pleasure of flying the Condorde on Air France from JFK to Paris in 1979 or 1980. That was a trip to remember. Only row of 2 across all First Class. About 100 total. The plane was full except for the first 2 seats in the first row on the left. I asked the stewardess about that. She said that is reserved for the President of France if there is an emergency. There was a speedometer on the wall in the front showing the speed. I believe it was up to about 1400 mph. And we were cruising at 60,000. All the Champagne, lobster, steak you could ask for...............

That's great... My dad and brother were both commercial pilots for decades and would have liked to have had your experience. The closest I got to one was at Kennedy. It was taking off as the flight I was on was taxiing after landing. For those who had some understood flight dynamics, it was something to see.

As long as we're doing airplane stories:

I never got on of course but did get withing spitting distance of AirForce 1 in 1973 or 74. I was stationed at the El Toro Marine Air Base and that's where AF1 was parked when Nixon visited the Western White House in San Clemente. Later on after he resigned, I did get to see him at an Angels' game. Unfortunately he didn't remember me.

Many, many years ago, my aunt was travelling to visit her brother in Nassau. Money was a little tight and so she opted for the red-eye special that was being offered at a much lower price.
When it came time to board, the passengers lined up and once on board there was much jostling about. She knew she was travelling at a reduced rate but, she thought...was it possible that they were expecting all these passengers to stand all the way to Nassau?
Would it have been asking too much to expect a seat?
Come to find out that it was not the aircraft she had boarded but the ptv. (passenger transfer vehicle)
Suddenly, having settled comfortably in her seat, conditions on the red eye were not so bad after all.

LOL. I once took a hop from the El Toro Marine Base in Santa Ana, CA to Memphis on a C130. Sat in cargo straps for the 6 hour flight. Never again.
