We are looking to spend a couple of nights in Ciudad Colonial in SD in the next couple of weeks. I?ve read the reviews, and guidebooks, and websites about these places, and from what I?ve read I?ve narrowed it to Hotel Conde De Pa?alba, El Beaterio, and Hotel Atarazana. Based on everything that I?ve seen, any of these should suit our family of 5 fine. Yes, it is more than we normally spend, but these hotels are not simply a place to sleep, but appear to have some character to them.

Is there anything negative about any of these that I need to know about? Especially, anything recent that would not make it into the guidebooks? Any other hotels that is similar to these that I should consider?

Thank you!

Hi:
I have stayed at Hotel Conde many times. When you make a reservation tell the gal you want a room with a balcony. The rooms are not fancy but they are big, comfortable and have character. The real beauty of this place is their outdoor cafe. You can get 3 meals a day, drinks and tapas. It seems like it is a gathering place for locals and tourists alike. You can't beat the location. You are in the heart of the Zona.

I have always stayed at Hostal Nicolas de Ovando on Calle Las Damas. It has always been excellent and couldn't be located in a better place!

Last time I was in Santo Domingo was in Oct 2003. I normally go to the North Coast at least 4 times a year. Making a short and cheap visit this time from Fort Lauderdale on Spirit. Do you know if any of the hotels around Zona Colonial would have any restrictions on bringing a local to stay with me? I had no problem at Plaza Colonial back then.

What is the cab fare now from Zona Colonial within 5-mile radius?

What is the best way to get to the hotel and back to the airport if Spanish is fluent?

I will be meeting my girl coming from Sosua on Caribe Tour. I can look it up where it arrives but if anyone knows I would appreciate the response?

I have stayed at the Mercure several times because of its convenient location on Calle Conde. But I find it rather characterless and the reception staff can be off-hand.

The Atarazana, where I have stayed once, is a big contrast. Located in a side-street next to the Plaza de Espana but a short walk away from central square and Calle Conde, it is a small (only four or five rooms), recently-converted hotel in an old house. We had a very friendly welcome from the owners and their staff. It provides a nice breakfast and there are plenty of nearby restaurants for dinner. Because of high kerbs and uneven steps on the sidewalk, access could be a problem for anyone with a disability.
