Are higher fertilizer prices justified?

The fertilizer manufacturers say that “we have had to increase the prices of our products because of the higher international cost of the main raw material we use.” The Federacion Dominicana de Caficultores condemned an increase of 30 to 40 percent in fertilizers. Mr. Eusebio Guzman, president of Adocafe asked for a convincing explanation from the companies that import the raw materials, mix them and sell them as chemical fertilizers.

Mr. Guzman added that “urea, that was being sold at RD$190 and RD$200 is now being sold at RD$300 for one hundred pounds. This is almost twice the old price, and the increase was made without any previous advise to the consumers.

The Minister of Agriculture and the government as a whole, should exercise more controls on such important matters. They do not seem to care at all.”
