A total of 4,500 employees from 30 factories lost their jobs in 1995 in the Haina industrial. According to the newspaper El Siglo, among the factories that closed down were a plastic shoe manufacturer, another making leather shoes, and a cassette factory. Mr. Federico Gomez, president of the Asociacion de Industrias de Haina, said that imports of products similar to the ones that were manufactured in Haina was the principal cause of bankruptcies in 1995, and will be principle cause for other companies to out of business in 1996.
