An agreement was finally reached between the University Council of the Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo (UASD) and the professors and lecturers which will allow classes to begin at the end of January after registration is completed. The professors, who had been on strike in protest against the failure of the university to pay their Christmas bonuses in full, agreed to go back to work after it was agreed that the said payment will be made to those who earn under RD$5,000 per month, and to those who make more than that amount an advance towards the bonus will be given. The rector of UASD, Roberto Santana, told the news media that meant a RD$1,000,000 depletion in the university’s reserve funds.
The impasse between the university and the professors caused great concern among students, whose semester seemed to be in danger before the agreement was reached. Non-teaching employees of the university, and private vendors in and around the campus whose livelihood depends on the daily activities on the university’s grounds were also worried..
