Leonel Fernández, presidential candidate of the PLD, returned to Santo Domingo on Wednesday, 10 January, after several days visiting Miami and Taiwan. He spent five days in Taiwan at the invitation of its government. He met the Taiwanese President and the ministers for the economy, health, education and foreign affairs.
Upon his arrival he told the press he would seek agreements on technical assistance to develop fishing, aquaculture, textiles and the plastic industries in this country. He was quoted in the Listín Diario as saying: “We can design a development model based on high technology, similar to that they have in their principal cities.” He understands that the Dominican Republic should develop the sciences and the technologies and place them at the service of manufacturers to change from a mode of intense employment to a mode of intense capital use in the industrial free zones.
He said that his campaign is in its final stages and will now double efforts to win in the first round. He was received at Las Americas International Airport by his predecessor as presidential candidate and the party’s founder, Juan Bosch. Surveys have placed the PLD in the first place of voter preference, an outstanding performance given the 13% vote toll in the 1994 election.
