16 March is the last date for choosing a vice presidential candidate

The Junta Central Electoral reminded political parties that they have until 16 March to register their presidential and vice presidential candidates, to conform with the Electoral Law. The presidential candidates for the PRSC and the PLD are, however, expected to choose their running mates much before that date. The PRSC statutes leaves the choice of vice president to the presidential candidate. The PLD spokesmen have said that a short list of possible candidates approved by the party will be submitted to their candidate for his final decision.

So far, the PRD is the only political party that has announced its vice presidential candidate, although there is internal opposition to the nomination of Fernando Alvarez Bogaert on the grounds of his lower than expected contribution of voters during the 1994 election. The vice presidential candidacy is seen as a stepping stone to the presidency, more so now that the constitution prohibits the reelection of a president for consecutive periods.
