Jacobo Majluta, a former president of the country and presidential candidate for the PRD in the 1986 election, announced he is giving the support of his political organization to the candidacy of José Francisco Peña Gómez and his running mate. Lic. Majluta is affected by health problems, the details of which he has not disclosed to the general public.
Nevertheless, he said in a letter to the national convention of his party, the Partido Revolucionario Independiente, that because of his bad health and the time he will need to recover he became aware that “this time around it is almost impossible for the PRI to achieve total power and we should thus support an alternative party whose government program is similar to our own regarding the development of the country”.
He said that with the agreement he seeks the PRI would achieve partial power, not only by its directors and supporters being positioned in the new government but also by having its policies taken into consideration in the decision making processes. He says he feels that what is best for the country and the party is to sign a pact and proclaim Dr Peña Gómez as the PRI candidate for the presidency.
